Honoring Your Own Rhythm

"When the sun’s light and heat wane, the natural world lets lushness fall away. It strips down. All energy is directed to the essentials that ensure survival. Engaging in Advent’s stripping practices — fasting, giving away, praying — we tune into the rhythms humming in the cells of all creatures living in the northern hemisphere. We tune into our own essential rhythms." - Gayle Boss

Today is Winter Solstice. The shortest day of the year marking the return of the Sun. If we tune into our natural rhythms, we can sense that it's a time to go inward, slow down and find inner quiet. In honoring this slower rhythm we can take the time to reflect on what is passing and attune to what is before us. If only we could break the habit of mechanical time to allow for this slowing down!

I have two short stories I'd like to share with you. First, last night I had a vivid dream that my car got stuck in the mud after I was rushing somewhere so I wouldn't be late. Second, yesterday evening I took a Kundalini Yoga class that focused on detoxification. One of the movements we did included a fast paced breath with arms pulsing down while our legs hovered off the ground about two feet. We did this for what felt like an eternity. I found myself getting angry that this movement appeared to go on forever when I heard the instructor say that the intention of this movement was to release old anger. At that point I burst out laughing and stopped moving.

It is clear to me that the dream was a message from my subconscious to slow down and not get stuck in the mud of expectations. The experience at Kundalini Yoga was also an invitation to slow and listen to my body. There was no need for me to continue with an exercise, especially if it was causing me distress. As a Nia student and teacher, I know better to listen to my body and tweak for pleasure. This lesson was essential though, as a reminder for me to temper my own and others expectations, especially during this time of year, to listen to myself and resonate with my own rhythm.

As with this time every year, I feel the self-imposed stress of having to meet expectations of the holidays: cheerfulness, decorations, gifts, cards, gatherings, etc. This year I am giving myself the gift of not pushing myself to be and do any of the above. I am giving myself the gift of attuning to my own rhythm.

My wish for you during this solstice is that you temper expectations and attune to your own rhythm. <3
