“Breathing in, my loved one is in my arms. Breathing out, I am so happy.
Breathing in, they are alive. Breathing out, it is so precious to be alive together.
Breathing in, it is so wonderful to have them in my arms. Breathing out, I am very happy.”
- Thich Nhat Hanh, How to Practice Hugging Meditation
Thursday, July 7, 2022
Abuela celebrated her 104th birthday this weekend. I got to join the festivities via Facetime as my family had a small birthday party for her at the nursing home. She was radiant in a red dress, and in the birthday crown and sash that the nursing home staff got for her.
We are so immensely grateful that she made it - especially after experiencing four bouts of pneumonia this year alone. We celebrate her life, her strength, her resilience, her light, and the joyous celebratory spirit she emits and shares so generously with others. Thank you so much to those of you that made it to class this weekend to dance, Vamos a Gozar, in celebration of her <3.
I am in training the next few days and I WILL be teaching on Sunday (at 9:30AM PDT, a half hour early) and on Wednesday. So this message will be short. I read the article excerpted above, How to Practice Hugging Meditation, and was so touched by the lines at the end. It moved me to tears to think of intentionally hugging another from a meditative and mindfulness mindset - with awareness of how precious this time is that we have together. To celebrate that we are alive together in this moment and appreciating our connection with a heartfelt hug. The last time I saw abuela, I hugged her for an extended time...with the awareness that I may not see her again. I am hopeful that I will see her again.
And when I do, I will practice the intentional statements outlined in the article:
Breathing in, I know that life is precious in this moment.
Breathing out, I cherish this moment of life.
and then
Breathing in, my loved one is in my arms. Breathing out, I am so happy.
Breathing in, they are alive. Breathing out, it is so precious to be alive together.
Breathing in, it is so wonderful to have them in my arms. Breathing out, I am very happy.

Somos Luceros
Somos Luceros is a somatic dance practice designed to illuminate the wisdom of your body and cultivate deep embodiment of archetypal qualities that offer lightness, depth and joy. The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling, opening new chapters in our bodies where we can see and feel our most luminous potential. Release the stories in your body that weigh you down and reclaim your light. In Spanish, Somos means “we are” and Luceros means “bringers of light” or “bright stars.” This name honors my father, my paternal indigenous ancestors in South America, my heritage, and our collective oldest ancestor, the stars. We are dancing bodies of light.
With immense gratitude for your continued support,
Jennifer

Join us for the Dance of Rhythmic Freedom & Flow: An Embodied Exploration of our Synovial, Intercellular, Arterial and Venous Fluids
This class is a fusion of Somos Luceros and movement repertoires based on the fluids of the body from Shake Your Soul (Leven Institute).
Shake Your Soul® is a movement practice based on the fluids within our bodies. It is designed to awaken your natural dancer, relax your nervous system, energize your body, and awaken your soul through a powerful, fluid dance repertoire set to world music.
Our invitation in this class is to experience rhythmic freedom and flow in our bodies. We will move the fluid between our joints (synovial), the fluid within our cells (intercellular), the fluid (blood) that moves from the heart out to the cells (arterial), and the fluid (blood) that returns to the heart from the periphery (venous).
Enjoy this journey of allowing rhythm and flow to circulate joyous freedom through your body.
The dance moves are simple and guided by the language of storytelling. You are invited to receive the choreography, bring it into your body and make it your own.

Join us for Embodied Movement Explorations for Body Wisdom and Wellness
Body wisdom is being aware of and attuned to what our body needs to feel well. This somatic intelligence and tending can be accessed and cultivated in many ways.
Every week we will explore a variety of somatic movement practices that include somatic dance, yoga, QiGong, archetypal expression (mainly tarot), and other modalities that emphasize mindfulness and that guide self-knowing.
Classes for the month of July will focus on basking in the somatic sensations of joy in our body.
Our guiding tarot card for this class is the Four of Wands/Staves/Fire. The invitation is to open to joy, follow its expression as it moves through your body, deepen your connection with your specific somatic imprint of joy and to mobilize your face, torso and hips into a smile.
Just like we bask in the light and warmth of the sun, in this class we are invited to pause to bask, in celebration, of our felt sense of live-giving and life-affirming joy.
In this class we center the experience of living, feeling, sensing and moving in our bodies. We learn practices to know ourselves more deeply, cultivate joy, restore from stress, explore creative self-expression, and ways to nourish the various systems (fluid, muscular, skeletal, organ, nervous, and cellular) of our body.
Come to move your body, develop a deeper appreciation for the intelligence and wisdom of your body, and to learn practices to be well in mind, body, heart and soul.
Wear comfortable clothes to move in. No shoes required. Feel free to have a yoga mat, blanket or towel for floor-based practices.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the class/meeting.

Dance with Janice on Saturdays!

For those of you interested in a Saturday 10AM PDT Zoom class, I highly recommend Janice Steinberg's Nia classes! She is one of our beloved Somos Luceros community members and I dance with her whenever I can. I love her classes and know you will too.
This Saturday, July 9 at 10AM PDT, Janice is teaching Rhymin' Simon. Janice says, "Summer feels like the perfect time to revisit this routine to Paul Simon music—one of the first routines I created."
To join Janice's Saturday Nia classes (10AM PDT), email her to get on her mailing list. She sends the Zoom link for class via email on the day of class. And like my classes, Janice's classes are donation-based as well.

Mary Lenox's Poetry

Following is the inspiring poem, Hope, that Mary wrote and shared with us after class this past Sunday, July 3 and on Monday, July 4.
Hope
Here we are in the 21st century
Grains of sand in the sea of eternity
Grains of sand in the sea of eternity
Awakening, once again
To hope
Someday, maybe
All people will choose
Love over hate
Peace over war
Respect over apathy
Life over death
Oh,
May we remember
Freedom stories from all over the world
Animating hearts to keep moving
Onward
Again
Again
Again
Oh,
May we remember
Every act of love inspires faith
Every step of hope
Ignites courage born of struggle
To create better days ahead
Change is coming!
Hold on!
Hold on!
Hold on!
