"Surrender but don’t give up.
Listen more, push less.
Accept and embrace rather than resist and reject.
Go for quality not quantity.
Go for refinement not achievement.
Less is really more.
It’s not how far you go. It’s how you go far."
- Todd Norian
In my last newsletter I mentioned that my theme for September is Surrender. So I had to giggle when I opened my email this morning and found a lengthy e-newsletter titled "Surrender But Don't Give Up
!" from one of my favorite yoga trainers, Todd Norian of Ashaya Yoga
. Reading Todd's newsletter gave me some rich somatic concepts to work with: listen, push, accept, embrace, resist, reject, perform, refine, less is more, self-created boundaries, freedom
While much of Todd's article is about the resistance and limitations that come up with the aging process, it's ultimately all about surrender. The keywords he brought up reminded me of the movements we explored last night during session 1 of The Dance of the Dark Goddess: A Somatic Exploration of our Shadow
. Dancing with the shadow can feel like a push-pull dance. We often want to push the shadow away but feel the pull of its desire to be expressed. The shadow doesn't give up desiring to be expressed and we don't give up the impulse to repress it. There's a delicate dance here of surrender and will. It takes effort to resist, repress and hold back. But what if we listen to what we resist and let it be our teacher?
Tomorrow night, we go deeper into our shadow dance, allowing it to pull us safely into expression and release - into surrender. And then Friday evening, the class is extended for an additional half hour as we dance and befriend the shadow into greater lightness in the physical body.
I love the invitation to accept what is, dance with limitation and embrace the expansive relief that comes when we open a clench hand.
There's still time to join us for A Tarot Mini-Retreat with the Hanged Man card: The Art of Letting Go
. Registration is open until Friday morning (Sept 9) at 10:00am. Likewise, the two remaining Dance of the Dark Goddesses classes this week are open to drop-in's.
