One Family, One Planet

"If we were to look back at Earth from 200 miles up in space, division does not exist, and it is very clear that we are one family on one planet. This simple point of view could guide us to act in a way that is life sustaining and our worldview will be more open and inclusive. We will listen more and have greater patience in finding solutions.

Now is the time of awakening, where we become aware of our connectedness and our fundamental relationship to each other and most importantly to be aware of our existence in this world." - Grandmother Mona Polacca,
International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers

So much gratitude for the group of love warriors that came to Thanksgiving morning Nia last week in the spirit of connection. Huge heart thanks to Nia teachers Ann Nicolaysen, Shea Marsh and Tricia Noreus for each teaching a tribute song to Susan Tate, who was indeed surprised at the unexpected jam on her honor. How lucky we are to be part of such a beautiful Nia community! Our class focus was on the gratitude triad of Community, Teachers/Mentors and New Beginnings. We brought love to all three, and to one another, as we danced. As our beloved teacher/mentor Susan leaves us for a new beginning in Charlottesville, VA on December 1st, she knows she is being carried across the miles by a wave of community love. May that love support her spirit as she sinks her roots into her new home. <3 The photos above were taken by me and Joey Klein.

Like the wisdom in the quote above, Susan has modeled a loving awareness of human and global connectedness in her teaching, in her work as an author and wellness coach, and the way she moves through the world. I always said that walking into Susan's class was like being wrapped in a warm embrace. You'd come as you were and be accepted and loved exactly as you were. Charlottesville is so fortunate to be receiving the gift of her presence. The following is for Susan Tate, a tribute I shared after our Thanksgiving morning class.

Dear beloved teacher,
Thank you for taking me under your light-filled wings six years ago and modeling how to create a loving, supportive, compassionate and playful community rooted in love and kindness. You modeled how to be generous, collaborative, and nurturing while unwaveringly standing in the truth of who you are. The seeds of loving leadership you planted here in Seattle are forever woven into the DNA of the NiaSeattle community. We will miss you. Know that you are fiercely loved and have our support as you begin anew in Charlottesville, Virginia.
- With love, Jennifer

One of the conversations I had with Susan last week was about my desire to do something to serve and support what appears to be a world in tumult. She shared stories of her days marching and advocating for her women's rights and human rights. She encouraged me to wait for clarity so that I could serve in a way that is meaningful, soul-honoring and sustainable. It reminded me that in 2010, just a few months after my Nia White Belt training, I attended a local screening of the documentary film, "For the Next 7 Generations." This weekend I dug up my 2010 journal and found the passage from the day of the screening, October 24, 2010. We had been asked by the facilitators who we thought we could have an impact on the next 7 generations. I wrote quite a bit but the three areas I hoped to serve were: 1. Deepening our consciousness through Tarot, 2. Making the world a more joyful place by teaching Nia and 3. Creating safe spaces where people feel loved, accepted and supported for where they are in their lives at any given time. How would you like to impact the next 7 generations?

Well then, I'm off to a good start but desire to do more! In that spirit, I invite you to join me for an exploration of the tarot card, Justice, the archetype of cause and effect. Justice invites us to be truthful about our intent and impact, become accountable for our actions, and return our lives to a sense of order and balance. This is the perfect archetype to explore when you are seeking ways to reconcile or mediate imbalances in your life, when you are ready to make amends and when you feel called to advocate for your truth in a way that serves the greater good. The three-class series begins this Sunday, December 4, 2016 from 9:00am - 10:15am at Balance Studio in Fremont. You are welcome to participate in all three classes (Dec 4, 11 and 18) or drop-in to one or two. Each week we will explore, through tarot and dance, an element of Justice, building from the personal to the relational and ultimately to the global impact of cause and effect.
