Release Release Release!
"The word 'emotion' itself comes from the Latin emovere for move away, remove, stir up, agitate. If something vexes your mind - an event from childhood, a slight by a coworker, political discourse on social media - it begs for release. That can happen without the body’s direct assistance. For those able, though, an excellent way to let go is to stop thinking and put yourself into physical motion."
- Sarah

The quote above came from an article titled "The Danger of Rumination Without Release" by Sarah Smarsh. This beautiful article is a reminder of the intricate connection between our mind and body and the powerful impact movement can have on our lives. When I read it, I thought about how it was Nia, 14 years ago, that helped me move through the debilitating grief of unexpectedly losing my father. At the time it seemed absurd to me that raising my arms, opening my chest, shouting "YES!" and doing a front kick could feel so liberating and offer hope towards healing my broken heart. And yet that is exactly what Nia did. It offered me a path to mending that I've been grateful for everyday since 2003.

I then thought about ArcanaDance and how my creation of this practice was rooted in my desire to help myself and others feel deeply and release old stories and archetypal patterns we've been carrying in our psyches and bodies, through movement. This is the absolute truth. I created ArcanaDance, for myself, because my own mind and the stories I kept telling myself were keeping me stuck and woefully unhappy. I knew I needed to mobilize my body to shift my energy and choose new stories. I used the tools I I knew best - tarot and movement. ArcanaDance is actually 13 years old but only approaching its first year anniversary with the public. What I've seen over the past year, through sharing ArcanaDance, is people shed old stories and try on new ones, not through talking but through moving their bodies. Whether we dance, do yoga, run, or simply go for a walk, the act of moving our bodies artfully shifts our energy from stagnant to active release and from broken to mending.

I hope you enjoy the article and honor your commitment, at whatever level resonates, to movement. Let's keep moving together - shedding old stories and choreographing news ones!

Announcements! YES, classes Memorial Day weekend!

First, YES, I am teaching this weekend - both Sunday, May 29 at Balance Studio and Monday, May 30 at Embrace the Moon. Join me as I introduce a Nia routine inspired by the music of the Broadway musical, Hamilton. Thanks to Anita for having a birthday wish and putting me up to the task! Lin Manuel Miranda, creator of Hamilton, has a giant place in my heart. We're both Puerto Ricans from New York. Choreographing to his creation feels like blessing the path he's paved for hip hop and people of color to grace the Broadway stage. I am loving every minute creating this routine!

Sadly, I had laryngitis last week. It meant that I needed to reschedule The Empress mini-retreat. The good news is, now that it's been rescheduled, there are 3 open spots! The focus of this retreat is on the archetype of the mother. Whether or not you are a parent, there is a mothering force inside of you. It's the force that influences the wellness of your mind, body, heart and spirit. It guides your capacity for self-care, self-love and self-nurturing. This is the third time I am facilitating this mini-retreat. It's one of my favorite archetypes. The Empress is my birth card, or rather, the outward expression of the gift I bring to the world. It's always a joy for me to gather people together and create a loving and supportive space to learn, move, and nurture your spirit.
