A Note from Our President: Julie Rauch

I don’t know about you, but this election season I am feeling both anxious and gobsmacked (adjective: British - informal “utterly astonished; astounded”).  The rules seem to have been thrown out the window this year and along with it any naïve hope of mine that our government is really looking out for us.  But, I really don’t want to talk about politics.  Its’ just that often the encouragement we have as nutritionists is limited to the individuals we help on a daily basis.  We see their symptoms abate and their health improve.  But the larger picture, the direction of the country when it comes to food and health choices is difficult to gauge.  Sometimes it feels like swimming against the tide.

This past week I read an article that gave me a larger perspective and gives me much hope on the impact we’re having.  The article titled: “Big Food Strikes Back” was written by Michael Pollen for the New York Times Magazine.  He speaks about how “Big Food” has managed to beat back virtually every political effort to change food policy in America and has managed to limit government interference in their practices.  In it you’ll find much detail about the thoughts, actions, and intentions of the Obamas as well as the pressure, money, and influence of the few, but powerful corporations that drive the engine of their industry.
