It's been a while, but my absence has a reason! Or, it could be I'm in touch with you for the first time. Well, let me introduce you to my latest work ‘Asian Connection’. This is a group of seasoned traditional and jazz artists from Malaysia and Taiwan that joined me in the creation of new music that was recorded LIVE. The recordings are being mixed and mastered as you read this newsletter!
The music I have created, particularly my most recent works, frequently goes in surprising directions and transcends the music genres in the present time. This is evident in my latest release ‘Destiny’s Will’. I believe this is the main reason why the most prestigious jazz club in Malaysia, No Black Tie decided to invite me again to record and release another live album for their label right after ‘Destiny’s Will’.
‘Asian Connection’ is a rather unique project. We are really being playful this time - we fuse Latin, Pop and Folk rhythms into Asian melodies and original compositions with jazz interpretations. We then build it up with the sound of an ethnic instrument, the pipa, so to add a flare of spice to the already colorful palette. Secondly, joining me this time is a group of local legends and up and coming young and active talents from Malaysia and Taiwan comprising of Michael Veerapen on piano, Daniel Foong on bass and John Thomas on drums, Terry Hsieh on saxophone and Chung Yufeng on pipa. Last but not least, the inner beauty and joy of the musicians are luminous in ‘Asian Connection’, that was felt and connected with the audience and attracted many jazz newbie listeners. The outcome is remarkably spellbinding and intriguing and yet vigorous and refreshing.
‘Asian Connection’ has already had great success performing at the Borneo Jazz Festival 2017 in Malaysia. It is one of the most lovable and talk-about acts by the audience and the artistic director, Jun-Lin Yeoh. I was pleased to receive her feedback: "What a new sound to immers oneself in!”
