Issue # 26

From the President

Apologies for the late Sportsman last week. It was my fault as I thought I had sent my update to our editor. I had written it but I forgot to send it!
The J5/6 season is now over and with it a couple of flags to hang in the clubrooms. Congratulations to the J5/6A boys and J5/6A Reserve boys who finished the season on top of the ladder. Well done to the J5/6C Black girls who finished second separated only on goal difference from top spot.
Commiserations to the Metro 2 men, aka The Grass Crabs who bowed out of the finals in their preliminary finals match. I know that you will all be on hand to support the rest of the teams in finals this year. Your game updates each week are a great insight to the friendships and social aspects of YMCC hockey. Our Promotion 1 and Promotion 2 women’s team also went down in close matches but have the double chance as a result of finishing on top of the table.
Thank you to Shell Australia for the $500 donation to our Shooting Stars program at YMCC Hockey Club. This grant will be used to provide suitable equipment to the program so that children of all abilities can progress in their hockey skills which enables ongoing inclusion in physical activity and the social life of our club. The grant will also be used towards training more coaches so we can expand the program to benefit a larger number of young people.
There is plenty of finals and grand final action on this weekend so get down to support a team.
Good luck to everyone playing this weekend.

Club News

Congratulations to the womens masters Rae Blunt Pennant team who gained entry into next weeks grand final with a 5-4 victory during penalty strokes after a 1-1 draw at full times against Old Aquinas. The 'yummies' have had an amazing season with both new and old faces and we wish them all the best in their GF next Wednesday.

Our junior teams have also now joined the YMCC seniors teams in finals campaigns. Congratulations and good luck to the 8 junior team who will be playing finals this weekend. Many of these players have also been playing seniors this year... its fair to say the future at YMCC in looking very bright.

Special good luck to the Promotion 1 and 2  women's teams who both play elimination finals this week, having both finishing top of the ladder they are hoping to secure grand finals spots for next weekend. We hear the Promo 2s coach Kevin Knapp is away this week and has told the girls... "I'm expecting to be coaching next weekend". Hope both teams and have good wins and finish their successful 2019 season on a high.

The Prov 3 men play Hale this Saturday 14th September 2.45pm at Whitfords turf in a Grand Final not to be missed.

They have arranged for pre match preparation to start from 1pm at Perry Lakes followed by trip up to Whitfords where we hope see a repeat (or one better with a win in regulation time) of the boys Semi final performance, beating Hale 5-4 in a shoot out after 1-1 draw at full time.

Post post celebration are also not to be missed so get to Perry Lakes and then Whitfords to cheer the boys on.

Match Review

Metro 2 Men

Well it all came crashing down on a sunny afternoon at Whitfords. Guildford had generally had our measure during the season, and they were just a little bit better when it counted on the weekend. It was pretty warm and when the umpires quietly suggested forfeiting the game and heading to the bar several of us were keen, but a crowd had gathered so we thought we’d better put on a show. The presence of genuine “naughty chairs” on the sidelines and the use of an actual coin for the toss reinforced the gravity of the occasion. Guildford got on top of us early through their sneaky tactic of passing to each other, and we were a goal down before we knew it. A re-arrangement of positions at quarter time had only limited effect, and by half-time we were down by two. We were much better in the second half, and soon pegged one back thanks to a lovely combination by Coco and Burt. With the YM-dominant crowd bellowing in their ears the opposition were losing their nerve a little, resorting to blatant delaying tactics towards the end. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t find the back of the net. At the final whistle we were out on our legs and out of the finals race.

Despite the disappointment of losing it was great to be part of the finals action, and we were really touched by the number of YM members who made the effort to come out and support us. It is a testament to the spirit of the club and an example of what Saturday afternoon hockey is all about. Rest assured we will return the favour next weekend!

Now that our season has ended the team members will no doubt head their separate ways over summer. Coco (now to be known as “Sweetpea”) will frolic in the wildflowers, Burt will shop for a minivan and Captain Budgie will have all his mates over and cook them pizzas. The Animal will exhaust yet another dating app, no doubt with his brother telling him how great marriage is. Bundy will continue to cultivate international love triangles, while Joshie will come up with a whole lot of new short jokes to torment me with next season (not that any of them will actually be new). Ben will probably become an Uber driver, which will be handy for Ozzy who will hopefully get a haircut. Chicko will continue his erections in various corners of the state and will return next season even fitter and leaner than he is now (if indeed such a thing is even possible). Our goalie Sean will officially enter adulthood, and sadly for us will probably be snapped up by a higher grade team. Sean has been fantastic this year, and we are well aware that his efforts are a big part of the reason we got to play finals. Red will get to be the handyman his wife has been looking for, and as for Claz – one evening during the summer I will notice fireworks in the distance, and I will think to myself “Good for you Claz. Good for you.”

Finally, just a word of thanks to everyone who has made kind comments about our match reports over the season. We’re not the best team in the club on the field, but we do have a lot of laughs and I hope that readers have been able to share in at least some of them. With that I will sign off for the year.

Unless, of course, we do a “match report” for the wind-up …..

Canteen News

Last Saturday was our last Junior fixtures for the year at Perry Lakes and we would like to thank the players and parents from the 5/6 A Reserve boys team for their enthusiastic attendance to help with the various stalls and the fabulous amount of baking they provided.

I would also like to thank our team of regular volunteers who turn up week in and week out. Sherryn Howell along with Peter Judge and Garth Sly skilfully manage the BBQs so that the sausages are cooked when needed and the Breakie Burgers are cooked on demand to perfect the way people like their eggs.

Nikki Tadros, Chantal Armstrong, Lisa Crocker and Jaanus Leinpere have shared the coffee machine duties this year and pulled record amounts of coffees for Saturday mornings.

Also, a big thank you to Chantal for providing baking each week, managing  our team lists of volunteers  and the trays of jellies that have become so popular with our younger (and some older) players.

For the last 5 years or so, we have had Janice McKenner from Xpresso Delight supply the coffee machine and products and Brett Young from Wembley Bakers Delight help us with our bread products. Thanks  to these small businesses for supporting the club.

And lastly, I would like to thank all our players and parents who come and help in the canteen and also are our regular customers.

Have a great festive season and summer and see everyone back in April for the 2020 season.

A word about our Sponsors

Has your home loan rate become less competitive lately?
Do you want to know what your possible options are?

If you want some free, no obligation information about home loans then drop Cosi an email (  to see what the possibilities are.  Even if you have negative equity in your house and are paying some crazy interest rate, there are often ways to still get a better rate.

One lender has a niche where they will give you owner occupied rates on your investment property (as long as you have 25% of your loan as owner occupied).  Another lender will use an autoval if the loan is only 80% of the value, so where an actual valuation might come in lower the option to use an autoval might mean you are actually able to refinance.

Send me any questions or scenarios and I will gladly have a look at them and get back to you with some information.  If you successfully refer a loan or re-write your own loan you will get a $500 credit for your hockey fees!
