Issue # 17

From the President

Some cracking games of hockey over the weekend. I stayed up late on Sunday night/Monday morning to watch the Australian men take on Belgium in the Grand Final of the FIH Pro League. Our own Eddie Ockenden captained the Australian’s and Tyler Lovell made some unbelievable saves to help the Aussie’s win and also reclaim the number 1 world ranking. The Australian women finished second under the command of 2018 YMCC Promo 1 coach Steph Andrews who took on an assistant coach role with the team in late 2018.

Our Promo 1 women’s side had a bye on the weekend and I was following the Premier 1 men’s game on the live Hockey WA site https://hockeywa.altiusrt.com/. You had to refresh the site a lot in the last few minutes when the team scored quickly in the 47th, 48th, 56th, 58th and 60th minute in the 8-1 win. The men’s 40 div 1 side had a big 12-0 win and leading scorer Daniel “Woody” Woodward has improved his lead on the goal scoring table by adding a lazy 3 to his tally.

One of the great things about YMCC being a family club is the generations who play at the same club together. On Saturday we had another parent child combination when Michelle and Cailey Howell playing together for the first time and had a good win to celebrate. Michelle is adamant that she is still taller than her daughter Cailey but the photo I saw looked to me to suggest otherwise!

I will be away on holiday for a few weeks so Stuart “Bondy” Bond will take over the President’s update in my absence.

Good luck to everyone playing this weekend.

Paul Hough
YMCC President

Club News

Congratulations to Tristan 'Diesel" Sleigh and his lovely partner Jacqui and daughter Isla on the safe arrival of their twin boys Sebastian and Patrick.

Also well done to Tyler Lovell who was awarded Goal Keeper of the Grand Final in the Kookaburras win over Belgium in the inaugural FIH Pro League Final in Amsterdam last weekend.

The Premier 1 mens side had a massive 8-1 win over OGMHC, Jamie Dwyer slotted in 3 goals but was trumped by Jyi Connolly who landed 4. Few photos of the boys game below thanks to Tom Driscoll, see the YMCC Facebook page for the link to more photos from the mens matches on Saturday.

Shooting Stars

Our YMCC Shooting Stars and their dedicated coaches

YMCC has commenced the Shooting Stars inclusive hockey program run a Perry Lakes on a Saturday mornings this year. The program aims to provide opportunities for children of all abilities to play hockey and be involved in our club community.

This year is the first year the program has run and they've had a wonderful group of kids. Given the success this year, we hope to advertise more broadly and expand the program in 2020.

Rebecca, Sophie and Annie are the three dedicated Shooting Stars coaches and are helped by a team of volunteers who rotate into the program. So far this season the kids have really improved their foundation skills, we've been learning dribbling, pushing, slap hitting, dragging and tackling. Next term we'll be expanding these skills and learning hitting. The favourite drill for all participants is rob the nest.

Each week we have a small game to practice our skills and this is always enjoyed by the participants. This weekend the shooting stars going the J3/4 YMCC Fire and UWA teams in a scratch match. The teams were mixed and it was orange v plus on the day... it was a tight tussle throughout the game with amazing individual and team skills on display. Connor and Lica were solid in defence for their respective teams and Josh assisted his team across the entire field.

After the game Connor said "it was fun" and Josh said the best thing about playing hockey is "attacking and scoring goals". Both boys stated they would like to play in a team next year.

The 3/4 game was a highlight and we plan to have another match at the end of the season. The coaching team are also working on our older participants having a game in their age group as well.

Coach Annie Chappell states; our hope is that Shooting Stars will fulfill two purposes:
  • As a stepping stone into a regular team, for those children with the desire and ability
  • As a fun, integrated program where any child can play hockey

If you are interest or have a child that would like to play hockey the get in touch and come see our Shooting Stars down at Perry Lakes 9.30 on a Saturday morning (returns after the school holidays). And all YMCC member keep a look out and come cheer on the teams during the next match at the end of the season.
