Issue # 20

From the President

Well I am back from my break although not looking forward to stretching the hamstrings after a month of doing not a lot of exercise. A huge thank you to Stuart Bond who assumed the newsletter writing duties in my absence. Having read them whilst I was away I am inclined to invite him to do it more often.
Congratulations to Tyler Lovell, Marshall Roberts and Marshall Puzey who have all been named in the Thundersticks squad for the 2019 Australian Hockey League championships.
Both our men’s Premier 1 and women’s Promo 1 sides had 2 all draws on the weekend. The men were unlucky not to hold out a revitalised Curtin side, and the woman came from 2-0 down to score in the final quarter and keep their top spot aspirations alive. The Promotion 1 grade will be a tight contest and may come down to goal difference at the end of the season.
Please make sure you are following YMCC on Facebook and Instagram. You can follow the club using the links below and keep yourself up to date with events, clinics, fixtures, results and other club news.
Talking to one of our key sponsors David Cosgrove on the weekend, it was great to hear that he was helping so many of our members with their home loan needs. It is also pleasing to see the number of JDH sticks in people’s hands. Jamie Dwyer’s JDH is another key club sponsor and JDH supply a range of sticks, bags and other accessories. Please make sure you support all our sponsors who give generously to our club and also offer great benefits to our members.
Good luck to everyone playing this weekend.

Club News

Congratulations to our YMCC juniors that have been selected to represent WA in the U13s Australian Carnival in Hobart from 2nd - 8th October 2019.

Boys:- Oscar Evangelista, Padraig Munt, Harry Saunders & David Webster

Girls:- Stella Berry, Jemima Hoddinott, Ingrid Holmes a Court, Lotte Keogh, Jessica McDonald & Harper Newnham

Good luck with your preparations and the upcoming tournament. Well done to all our junior athletes that trialed. We are very proud of the way you represented yourselves and our club

There has been plenty of talk around the club about seeing 'Big D' in goals at the 1s and 2s mens training this week. Taking the field this weekend could see him represent all of YMs mens sides either as a field player or goal keeper.

Turf for Members

After the replacement of the sideline turf this year at Lemnos we have a fair amount of old turf that needs to be disposed of. Before dumping we would like to give our clubs members the chance to take what they would like and we will then dispose of the remainder.

Most of the rolls have a width of approx. 2.9m and varying lengths but generally 2.6m to 3.0m.

The rolls of turf are free for members and available any time for collection when the turf is open. Piles have been created for each club that shares Lemnos and it is first in best dressed.

They can call Wayne on his mobile to arrange viewing/collection.

Business Directory and Networking Ideas

YMCC are working on developing a business directory for members who own a business or who work for businesses that could benefit from either developing business relationships or promoting their business among club members.

The team have developed a survey to gain information regarding ideas and interest in developing this networking group. The hope is to arrange a catch up over a few drinks and nibbles with those interested. The linked survey will allow you to select your preferred time of the event and share your business details.

This is not only for business owners and there is an option for anyone to fill it out. So please select any of the above links to compete the survey and we will be in touch with more information.

Match Review

Metro 2 Men

This week the Grass Crabs faced off against our arch enemies Blades, at our favourite timeslot of 2:00pm at Perry Lakes. We were coming off a 2-week break, courtesy of a bye and a forfeit, and it well and truly showed with a very sluggish start which nearly saw us down by a couple in the first 5 minutes. Thank goodness for the heroic efforts of Sean in goals! We were rightly given a strong talking to by a frustrated Burt at quarter time, and after spending a bit of time in the room of mirrors taking a good hard look at ourselves, we started to slowly improve. Our defence tightened up, and we managed to get the ball moving through our midfield unit, which had been bolstered by bright-eyed bushy-tailed young recruits Hoff and Luffy. However, the frustration continued for Burt, who had an opportunity in front of goal only to miss by a margin smaller than the IQ of anyone who thinks jokes about a person’s short stature are funny. Celebrating their birthday, the Webster twins decided to take over in the second half, with Matt “The Weapon” having eyes only for his brother when placing his famous long balls. This strategy proved effective, however, as Andy “The Animal” slotted a lovely reverse stick shot to give us a narrow lead. Trying to re-capitulate his 5-goal heroics from the last Blades encounter he had several more attempts, carefully moving the ball over to his reverse side each time, but sadly he proved to be a one-shot wonder on this occasion (unlike others on the team, if the post-game tales are to be believed!). But it proved to be enough in the end. Craig aka “Captain Budgie” aka “Shakira” impressed with his hip flexibility, but little else, while Red was handy (as always) down the back. Despite the less-than-perfect performance there was a celebratory mood after the game, and with several team members announcing new pregnancies the conversation inevitably revolved around the ins and outs of fertility. Next week we hope to settle a score against John XXIII….

Canteen News

What a day the “canteen crew” had last week. On paper, it looked like a regular Saturday morning but we knew it would be something special with so many YM teams playing at home.

125 Breaky burgers and 300 sausage sizzles left the BBQ stand along with128 coffees and hot chocolates from the canteen.

Our grateful thanks go to the parents and players of the Year 11/12 A and A reserve boys teams and the 7/8A girls team for their help at all the food stations and the fabulous amount of yummy home baking which all contributes to the record amount of takings for a Saturday morning. And, also thanks to all the parents who, week in and week out, support the canteen as customers!

We have 2 cartons of canteen lost property. Please drop in and have a look for your mislaid containers and plates.

Match Report J5/6 A Prom Girls
I am, to say, embarrassed about our game
By Scout

So many opportunities for thee to score
It didn't cost us though
The other team were very poor
On the upside our passing was great
All passes were trapped
And the hits flew flat and straight
At halftime Gemma made her call
And we were ushered back to the field,
Uma made it, without a fall
Our team played well in the second half
Most of the game was played on the opposite side
Then Toni did something that made some parents barf
Stella and Scout were taken off defence
And though some were worried
The substitutes played well
No stomachs need be flurried
We should have won 10-nil
But their goalie was too good (not really)
What a pill

Match Report J7/8 A Girls

It was quite warm in the late morning of Saturday the 27th of July at Perry Lakes. Our YM 7/8 Girls A team were pumped for the game ahead against Melville. If they beat us, we would be out of the top three teams in our competition and would lose our chances of winning. We kicked off with a great warmup, one that helped some others and I to win Narrogin Carnival last weekend. I believe that to be the secret to our success.

The game started at 11:30 AM and was competitive right from the whistle, with balls flying up to either end of the field and back again. But after the first 10 minutes or so, you could see players from both teams starting to tire. This was due to the fact that U13s State trials had been held that morning, (an extra three hours of hockey on top of our game). There were a few close calls and shots on goal from both teams but by the end of the half, the score remained even at nil all.

In the second half, we knew we would have to be strong, as Melville would be eager to score. Just like the first half, there was a lot of smacking up the line as the grass made it difficult to use our skills. We fought through to the end, even though some of us were almost completely fatigued, Georgia managed to get the ball into the goal (with a beautiful flick into the bottom left corner) from a scramble in our attacking 'D'.  There were a couple of people that stood out across the game. Cailey helped us a lot in getting the ball out of our defence and up into our attack so she was awarded the tutu, (player of the day). Ruby was especially low, strong and determined so she received the mongrel award, (never gives up).

Well done girls, another well-deserved win for YM!
