From the President

A super round of hockey with some very impressive wins. It is getting towards the business end of the season with many teams well positioned to play finals.
Our Promo 1 women’s side won 12-0 against Rockingham. There were 10 individual goal scorers with Cinda bagging a hat-trick. An exceptional team performance. Both the Women’s 2 + 3s had draws and the 4s got a hard-fought victory. Super work ladies.
The 1s Men’s played some very stylish hockey and won 4-2 against WASPs.  The 2s nullified WASPs from scoring but also nullified themselves from scoring – a nil all draw. I had the pleasure of playing 3s to bring up the average age from 16 years to something more respectable. A superb 2-0 win and we are now seeing that the youth is coming through the ranks fast and the future is very bright indeed.
Many teams are having a well desired rest this weekend. Hope everyone rests up the body and gets excited for a big end to the season. A good time to re-assess both your teams and individual goals and ensure they are on track.
School Holidays rest for some but not for our Juniors. We had 52 kids down at the July holiday clinic practicing new skills and getting superb coaching. Well done to all of those involved. Super work.
Some very humorous fines were handed out by the 2s men at their mid-season session. Enjoy.

Business Directory and Networking Ideas

YMCC in combination with Cosi Home Loans are working on developing a business directory for members who own a business or who work for businesses that could benefit from either developing business relationships or promoting their business among club members.

The team have developed a survey to gain information regarding ideas and interest in developing this networking group. The hope is to arrange a catch up over a few drinks and nibbles with those interested. The linked survey will allow you to select your preferred time of the event and share your business details.

This is not only for business owners and there is an option for anyone to fill it out. So please select any of the above links to compete the survey and we will be in touch with more information.

Mens Metro 2: The crabs are back

We all knew it was coming, and indeed the choke was well and truly on in Round 10 against a John XXIII side that bore an uncanny resemblance to their higher-grade team that had a bye that weekend. The less said about that game, the better.

We bounced back the following week against Joondalup, at their new home ground which is conveniently located next to…. nothing (not even toilets!). I would be lying if I said we were the better team on the day, but we were the team with the most goals, courtesy of Burt making the most of our limited opportunities, further endearing himself to the Joondalup team who were already very vocal fans of his work.

This week we faced ECU (otherwise known as “Coco’s mates)” but we were hit with illness, as some key Grass Crabs fell victim to the latest incarnation of influenza. We were grateful for the assistance of Shoog, Tommy and Crocs for filling in, and they were all welcome additions. Sal was also there, and while he may like to think of himself as filling in, we all know he belongs with us now. We’re just waiting for him to realise it.

A sudden rain shower appeared out of nowhere for the start of the game, sending our only substitute scuttling for cover. Not known for our fast starts (or middles, or ends) we were under pressure initially, but the wise heads of Josh, Crocs and Tommy down back kept us out of trouble. Eventually Shoog got on the end of an uncharacteristic pass from Burt for a classy opening goal. Soon Sal thought he had another, and he was half-way back to the centre waving his shirt around his head before he realised that the ball had bounced off the post and was heading back into the opposition’s forward line. But soon enough he had an actual goal and could celebrate for real. Andy Webster put one in just on half-time, and we went to the long break at 3-0. Worried about Andy’s rise up the goal-scoring ladder, Burt made sure he snuck one in during the second half, while Coco rounded out the scoring with one closer to the end. ECU scored a few cheap ones as we ran out of legs towards the end, but we held on for a 5-2 win.

The mood was buoyant post-game, as Port thumped the Crows and Fremantle supporters desperately tried to divert the conversation away from football. Ozzy had a great game and was recognised by being the only regular Grass Crab named in Sal’s top 5. As we are heading into the “pointy” end of the season the post-game discussion turned to a critique of our individual preparations in the 24 hours leading up to the game. The general consensus was that it was generally less than ideal, and thus we resolved as a team to abstain from certain activities that could negatively impact our performance on Saturday. We’re sure that the guys who were missing will agree – well, I know that Claz does for one.

And speaking about team rules – how about mandatory flu vaccinations next year fellas?

Junior News

YMCC Holiday Hockey Clinic

The July Holiday Hockey Clinic was held at Shenton turf this week. There were over 50 participants who attended the 3 days were they had the opportunity to learn new skills, including a talk and skills demonstration from Jamie Dwyer.

Day 1 finished with 2 giant all kids versus all coaches games ... chaos but lots of fun. Day 3 had a giant obstacle course... combing skill and speed.

Special thanks to all our fantastic coaches who made this week memorable for the juniors.
