The MARSOC Foundation Newsletter

December 14, 2016

Friends of the Foundation,

On December 7th, I had the privilege of watching five Marine Raiders graduate from The Honor Foundation’s rigorous 127-hour transition program.

As we close out 2016, our team at the MARSOC Foundation is determined to launch into the new year by creating more tier-one opportunities for our community. Through strategic partnerships with programs like THF, we will increase opportunities for our Marines and Sailors, and provide every outlet to ensure success as they move on to the next chapter in their lives.

I would like to extend a tremendous thank you to The Honor Foundation’s CEO, Joe Musselman, and Chief of People Operations, Phil Dana, for their continued dedication to supporting the Marine Raider community and the MARSOC Foundation.

Gung Ho,

Tyson Stahl
Director of Strategic Engagment
The MARSOC Foundation

2016 MARINE CORPS MARATHON:
RUNNERS' SPOTLIGHT

On October 30th, each member of our Marine Corps Marathon Charity Partner team successfully completed the 26.2 mile race in Washington, D.C. Thank you to all of our runners for their commitment and dedication to training and to raising funds and awareness for the MARSOC Foundation. Because of our runners, and thanks to our donors who gave so generously, our team raised over $112,000 on behalf of the Foundation this year! Thank you to all who participated and supported our team - we hope to see you next year!

Read on to learn more about our team members' accomplishments and why they #Run4Raiders!

Ashley Papadopolous: WHY I #RUN4RAIDERS

Ashley runs to honor her cousin, SSgt Stanford "Ford" Shaw, who was tragically lost along with six other Raiders and four National Guardsmen on March 10, 2015, when their helicopter crashed. At this year's Marine Corps Marathon, Ashley raised over $7,400 to become the top fundraiser for the MARSOC Foundation!

"I run for Ford who will always be beside me. Funny story - Ford hated to run, but one late night he and another cousin of mine hatched out a plan to run a Turkey Trot with a boom box on his back - blasting out an epic playlist she created. My group of cousins always had these crazy plans. This was Ford's last Thanksgiving he ever celebrated. In a tribute to him the following year, I ran an extra slow turkey trot (Ford hated running!) with a boom box on my back - playing the same playlist he played that day.  I plan to play tribute every year. My boom box had lots of photos of him plastered all over. Such a fun way to remember Ford."

Each year, Ashley also runs in a turkey trot. This year, she was joined by her friends and they were cheered on by strangers who sang along with the songs from the boom box.

Chris Helbig: WHY I #RUN4RAIDERS

Chris ran the Marine Corps Marathon in honor of his friend Dave, who was unable to join him on race day because he was diagnosed with cancer. Chris wore two bibs while he ran - one for himself, and one for Dave. Dave ran the 10K last year and had hoped to run again this year, but was unable to do so because he was recovering from surgery.

Chris has been on the Foundation's Charity Partner Team since 2014. He has raised over $9,700 for the Foundation, and brought his brother along to join our team this year. Chris was the winner of this year's "Spiritus Invictus" Award - showing true unconquerable spirit!

Lindsay Pirek: WHY I #RUN4RAIDERS

Lindsay runs to honor her fiance', SSgt Stanford "Ford" Shaw, who was among the seven Raiders and four National Guardsmen lost in a helicopter crash on March 10, 2015. This was Lindsay's first year running the Marine Corps Marathon with our Charity Partner Team, and she completed the race in an unbelievable overall finish time of 3:53:46.

"I really appreciate the opportunity to run with the team. The MARSOC Foundation makes me feel like I am still a part of the Raider family even though my fiancé is gone. Knowing that there is an organization still looking out for us Raider 7 girls gives me peace of mind when times are tough."
Jody Lynch: WHY I #RUN4RAIDERS

Jody joined our MCM Charity Partner Team for the second year in a row and he bolted to the finish line this year, completing the race in just 3:25!

Jody also competed in the 2013 MARSOC Foundation Leadman Triathlon Team. Among these three races, Jody has raised over $19,000 in total on behalf of the Foundation, and was our top fundraiser at the 2015 MCM!

"I run because they would run for us."
MIMOSA BAY TURKEY TROT

Thank you to Mimosa Bay Turkey Trot Committee Members Jennifer Tucker, Tia Copes, Roxanne Hyatt and Sarah Beth Miller Morgan. The run was created in 2012 and repeated in 2013 and 2014. This year’s event raised the most funds to date! The MBTT has raised nearly $9,000 it its history!

"The 2016 Mimosa Bay Turkey Trot was an overall success. We raised nearly $4,500 in profits for the MARSOC Foundation and everyone enjoyed themselves! We were excited to be able to pick this neighborhood tradition back up to benefit so many in our neighborhood, just three miles from MARSOC Headquarters. Initial race registration was only $25 for adults and $15 for kids, so our profits speak volumes to the generosity of the local community in the form of sponsors and individual donations. This event is sure to stick around, so if you'll be in Eastern North Carolina the week of Thanksgiving 2017, plan on strapping on your running/walking shoes and join us!” - Jennifer Tucker

BLACKHAWK MEMORIAL UNVEILED

On Friday, November 18, the Blackhawk Memorial in Navarre, FL, was unveiled. The memorial was built to honor the 11 U.S. servicemen lost during the crash of a Black Hawk helicopter on March 10, 2015.

The monument pays tribute to MARSOC Raiders Capt Stanford Shaw III, MSgt Thomas Saunders, SSgt Liam Flynn, SSgt Andrew Seif, SSgt Marcus Bawol, SSgt Trevor Blaylock and SSgt Kerry Kemp and Louisiana Army National Guard members George Wayne Griffin Jr., George David Strother, Lance Jacob Bergeron and Thomas Charles Florich III.

Thank you for supporting the MARSOC Foundation by purchasing a t-shirt, tank or hoodie from our Booster campaign and honoring MARSOC's Fallen Heroes. Because of you, we raised almost $3,400!
Thank you to Alex and Adam Woytkiw and their mother, Loren Robin, who hosted a fundraiser on behalf of the MARSOC Foundation in Jupiter, FL, in October. We appreciate your support and contributions to help the Raider community!
