On a cold Friday evening in April, in the Weyerhaeuser boardroom, Natalie Diaz placed her hands on a glass of water, grabbed the podium and said, “I’m just going to grab this vodka and fulfill some more Native American stereotypes.†This is how Diaz began her reading, in front of around forty-five Macalester students and friends. Before reading, Diaz spoke a little of the Mojave language and thanked everybody that facilitated her trip to Macalester. After this, Diaz began reciting some of her poetry with rhythm and poise.
