CAUT Signs the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (CAUT, January 13)

UCT Libraries’ New Platform Supports Publishing of African-centric Research (University of Cape Town, January 13)
"The University of Cape Town (UCT) Libraries has developed a new continental platform for open access publishing in Africa. The platform allows the African research community to take ownership of creating and sharing its own scholarly content (including open access journals and open access monographs and textbooks), which contributes to the growth and development of local research for African societies." Current Market Rates for Scholarly Publishing Services (A. Grossmann & B. Brembs, F1000Research 10:20, 2021)
A new contribution to the “cost of scholarly publishing” discussion, this research provides “a granular, step-by-step calculation of the costs associated with publishing primary research articles, from submission, through peer-review, to publication, indexing and archiving” and determines that “the publication costs for a representative scholarly article today come to lie at around US$400.” Read more

Evaluating Publishers as Partners with Libraries and Higher Education (R. Caldwell, Scholarly Kitchen, January 13)
In this post, Caldwell proposes that “libraries would benefit from evaluating how well a publisher’s practices align with the values of libraries, public and land-grant institutions, and some learned societies” and proposes a system she dubs “Publishers Acting as Partners with Public Institutions of Higher Education and Land-grant Universities” and that focuses on three key values: democratization of information and education, information exchange, and sustainability of scholarship. Read more
