Edmonton Ultimate Players Association's Monthly Newsletter

2017 February Newsletter

General Manager's Note

The warm weather lately has made spring feel even closer. Spring is always our busiest time of year with the start of so many leagues and the registration of many new members. Right now I am working on getting the details of our Spring & Summer League finalized and up on the website so that you can start planning.

As organizers of EUPA the biggest help that we can get from you as members, is for you to tell your friends, family, co-workers, etc about our sport, and to bring out anyone who you think might be interested in playing. Maybe if you bug them just enough they'll even sign up for your Summer League team ;)

Have fun, play Ultimate!

Looking ahead to 2017

In 2017, your new Board of Directors are looking forward to an exciting year! First, the new Board of Directors as you may have seen, are being introduced one-by-one in this newsletter, with a quick info tidbit about each. If you see them about, please say hello!

This is also the year to develop our new Strategic Plan, a living document where we make projections and goals on where ultimate and EUPA fit into Edmonton in the next 3-5 years. The Board met in January to update and refine the previous Strategic Plan that has brought us so far, and work continues. In the next two months we plan to be rolling out the new Strategic Plan, complete with many opportunities for you to get involved with the growth of Edmonton Ultimate.

With the Wayne Gretzky statue moved to its new home at Rogers Place, the renamed Northlands Coliseum is now open for revisiting its original purpose: to bring sport to Edmonton! In December 2016, members of your Board visited the site to consider its potential for indoor Ultimate. From January to March 2017, the City of Edmonton will explore various options for Northlands Coliseum and the EUPA Board will be following the development.

Though 2016 saw a successful Canadian Ultimate Championships in addition to EUPA’s Stubble Jumpers and Pre Fall Brawl, there are a lot of great tournaments in the Alberta region! Announcements will follow in the coming months.

Outside of Edmonton, there are some big tournaments happening in Canada and around the world. Summer 2017 will see the Men’s, Women’s, Master's and Juniors’ Canadian Ultimate Championships taking place in Ottawa, while the Canadian Ultimate Championships Mixed Division will be closer to home in Saskatoon.

It’s also a great year for travelling for Ultimate: though Lei-Out Beach Ultimate tournament took place in Santa Monica on January 21-22, the World Championship of Beach Ultimate will be taking place in Royan, France in June 2017. If Portugal is more your vacation style, the first ever Great Grand Master Beach Ultimate Championships might be more your speed in Lisbon, Portugal, for players 48 years+.

Do you know....

Andrea Wallace?

Continuing with our Edmonton Ultimate intros this month we are chatting with board member Andrea Wallace. Andrea is currently serving her second year on the board in the role of Member at Large.

When did you start playing Ultimate? I started playing ultimate with EUPA in 2008 when friends of mine needed more women for their summer team, The Hucking Owls.
Team(s)? Huck A Little (Thursday Indoor League), Huck-A-Lot and Underdogs (Summer league)
Previous sports? Swimming & water polo
Current pump up song? This Girl by Kungs vs Cookin' on 3 Burners
Fun fact? My first job was as a bridge caddy when I was nine years old, where I accidentally spilled red wine all over a very posh woman's all-white pantsuit. Shockingly after that incident, I kept the position for another six years!

Rule of the Month

A review of travels

Ultimate Canada has been hard at work developing a series of videos to help with learning all the rules. First up: Travels. This video does a great job of reviewing the details of the rule and clearing up some common misconceptions.

The Rule of The Month may contain wording directly from the USAU 11th Edition Rules, paraphrasing or interpretations thereof, check out the full rules here. If you have a question about the Rules or Spirit of the Game, feel free to contact us at
