Bienvenidos/as, boas-vindas, and welcome back to the Heidelberg Center for Ibero-American Studies! This issue of the HCIAS Newsletter features information on current calls for applications, events of the Master's program, and upcoming presentations given by members of the HCIAS and visiting scholars. We also congratulate Francisco Moreno-Fernández who has been awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship!

HCIAS Master's Program "Communication and Society in Ibero-America"
Now accepting applications
We invite all interested candidates to apply for the HCIAS interdisciplinary master’s program. Providing students with advanced knowledge from a variety of disciplines from the humanities and social sciences such as communication studies, political science, sociology, geography, linguistics, literature, cultural studies, and history, the program addresses the current challenges facing Ibero-American societies from a communications perspective.
Application period: International students: May 1st - June 15th & German students and international students with German qualification documents: May 1st - September 30th, 2022.

Junctures_2022 International DAAD Summer School
We invite master's students, Ph.D. students, or undergraduate students in their final year of studies from the Social Sciences and Humanities to apply for the International Summer School at HCIAS “Critical Junctures and Windows of Opportunity for (Post-)Pandemic Societies in Europe and Latin America – Junctures_2022" (July 25th to August 2nd, 2022, in Heidelberg). Courses will be held in English and Spanish by teaching staff from Heidelberg and Latin America. Participants residing within the Latin-American region are eligible for an allowance to help cover their accommodations and travel expenses. Participation is free of charge. Supported by the DAAD. Deadline: May 27th, 2022

Call for Applications: 3 scholarships for doctoral candidates
The Heidelberg Center for Ibero-American Studies together with the Heidelberg Center Latin America in Santiago de Chile, is inviting young scholars to apply for one of three scholarships to pursue a doctorate in interdisciplinary Ibero-American Studies at Heidelberg University. These scholarships are to be granted by the Landesgraduiertenförderung of the State of Baden-Württemberg and will support doctoral candidates in conducting their research projects within the framework of the HCIAS doctoral research group “Communication and Society in Ibero-America”. Deadline: May 26th, 2022.

HCIAS Master´s program
Guest lecturer: Miguel Carrera, professor of Economics at the Applied Economics Department at the University of Salamanca, will give a block seminar on Poverty and inequality in Latin America between May 30th and June 3rd, 2022. As part of the HCIAS Master’s program, the course will first present the definitions and methods for measuring poverty and inequality and provide a quantification of the data and the main explanatory factors for the persistence of these phenomena and their socio-economic implications.


Francisco Moreno-Fernández, director of the HCIAS, was officially awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship, the most highly endowed research award in Germany that rewards international researchers who lead projects of excellence at German universities. The ceremony took place on May 12th, 2022 in Berlin with the Federal Minister of Education and Research Bettina Stark-Watzinger and the President of the Humboldt-Stiftung Hans-Christian Pape participating in the event. Cogratulations!

HCIAS Open Lecture
Hugo Romero, Ass. Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities, Universidad Austral de Chile, will participate in the HCIAS Open Lectures with a talk on the topic of "Producing territories for extractivism: Encomiendas, estancias and fuertes in the long-term political ecology of colonial Southern Chile". The lecture is organized by Rosa Lehmann, HCIAS-Junior Professor of "Innovation and Sustainability in Ibero-America" in collaboration with the Heidelberg Center Latin America (HCLA) and the Centre for Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic Studies (CAPAS) and will take place on Monday, May 30th, 2022 at 6:00 PM CET.

HCIAS Open Lecture
Miguel Carrera
, professor of Economics at the Applied Economics Department in the University of Salamanca, will participate in the HCIAS Master’s program lecture series with a presentation on Economic and political cycles in Latin America. The lecture will take place on Tuesday, May 31st at 4:15 PM in the Neue Universität, ehem. Senatssaal.

Presentations by HCIAS scholars

Óscar Loureda,  HCIAS deputy director and professor of Ibero-American linguistics, communication, and translation studies, will give the inaugural lecture of the seminar "La sociolingüística del español, hoy: aspectos teóricos y aplicaciones", organized by the University of Zaragoza. His presentation will focus on the demolinguistics of Spanish in Europe and will take place on May 26th at 10 AM CET

Media and Communication in Global Latinidades
Pablo Portén-Porten-Cheé, junior professor of communication studies and information society in Ibero-America at the HCIAS, is co-organizing alongside a large network of colleagues from Latin America this virtual preconference at the International Communication Association Annual Conference (ICA), the largest and most influential professional society in the field of communication studies.

Héctor Álvarez Mella, research associate at HCIAS, will give a presentation on the subject of Spanish. International Language: Projection and Economy, on Monday, May 23rd at 8 PM CET.  The talk will take place online within the framework of the "Diálogos" series organized by the Hispanic-American Institute, Boston, USA.
