Meet new staff members!

David Brown
Sydney Simpson
If you were in worship last week you had the pleasure of meeting two wonderful new additions to St. Paul's staff (and if you weren't there, check it out on YouTube or Facebook!).

David Brown, Technical Arts Director
David is a father of three, former foster dad, and conversation starter about diversity and inclusion. He comes to St. Paul's with over 20 years working in live event production. He's helped churches and schools by helping teach and train volunteers and students.

Sydney Simpson, Contemporary Music Director
Hi everyone! My name is Sydney Simpson, and I am so excited to be joining this church as the Contemporary Music Director! I just graduated from KU with a degree in Music Education, and I am currently teaching middle school choir in Kansas City, Kansas. I love worship music, and I have been leading worship since I was a freshman in high school. I am overjoyed to be part of a church that values people of color, the LGBTQ community, and the many other marginalized groups of people that God loves unconditionally. Thank you all for the kind words of welcome, and I look forward to meeting you all soon!

We're hiring: Connections Ministry Coordinator

Do you have a passion for helping people grow in their faith? The Connections Ministry Coordinator works to invite, engage, and care for congregation and guests in a changing context (online, in-person, hybrid). This part-time person works closely with volunteers and systems for engaging folks more deeply on the discipleship pathway.

Visit our website if you feel like this might be a good fit for you or someone you know! We’d love to connect with you.

Message from Pastor Lora

September 18, 2020

Sometimes hope feels like making it through the day through grit and resilience.

Sometimes hope feels like energy and momentum.

Church right now feels like it is a mix back and forth of both. I’ve talked a lot about the grit and resilience part, but I want you all to know that there is something really beautiful bubbling up right now at St. Paul’s too.

On Thursday night, we will have the opportunity to vote on not one but TWO candidates for ministry. Luke Miltz and Andrea Murdock have been recommended by Staff Parish to the church conference for church recommendation to take their next step in ministry. That means all of you who are members who sign up below to be a part of the Zoom meeting on Thursday to have a chance to vote on their recommendation too.

It is a beautiful gift to have people saying “yes” to God for the work of ordained ministry. Luke and Andrea join Allison Marcus and Mike Marcus who have already received your vote in this journey. Allison and Mike are both going up for provisional membership this year as deacons. That is FOUR people who are actively pursuing ordained ministry through St. Paul’s. Amazing! God is doing big things, y’all.

I think about where we were even a year ago in a place of limbo with the denomination, wondering about the future of the church. We were frustrated with the harm the UMC continued to cause and had a hard time seeing a future that was beyond a place of legislation and votes and policy change. To be clear, those changes still need to happen. But look at what God is generating in the meantime!

The pandemic postponing General Conference has given our church some breathing room to be who we are, to let God call who God calls, and to thrive even in the midst of a global pandemic. In the last year, we have welcomed almost 40 new members and their children to this church.

God is up to something.

Energy. Momentum.

My prayer is that you feel it too, and if you don’t, join us Thursday night and listen to Luke and Andrea share more about their calls to ministry. Listen to them and let God speak to you through them.

“See” you Sunday for our last week in Joel!
