Hi everyone. I (Brett Hamer) am helping Marty out in the Club Captain’s role as he has had some unforeseen work commitments arise and will be based overseas for a while. Some of the below may interest you or give you an update as to what’s been happening at the surf club this side of Christmas.

Firstly, the committee has been working extremely hard behind the scenes on membership, club maintenance, grant applications, event entries, merchandise, coaching allocations and governance, all impacted by our good friend COVID! Please remember these are voluntary roles and often filled by lifeguards and competitors who are not getting paid.

The committee should you need to contact them are as follows:

President Paul “Hawk” McVicar
Chairman Carl Jones
Interim Club Captain Brett Hamer
Secretary & Merch Jenna Middleton
Treasurer Andrew "Scrawny” Simkin
Lifesaving Coordinator Georgia McLaren
Craft Coordinator Nic Rhodes-Grennell
Boat Captain Tim Marsden
Advisor Graham Findlater
Key things of note that have been sorted over the last few months:
  • New IRB hull due just after Christmas
  • Grants secured & orders placed for new club marquees, rowing machines and an IRB trailer
  • $6K received for new rowing oars
  • COVID vaccination mandate implemented
  • More 6ft and 10ft boards delivered
  • Police vetting for all coaches
  • Strategic planning around current club and future club
  • Club maintenance and improvements schedule
  • Training squads established and programmes rolled out
  • 27 new lifeguards qualified and patrols commenced
  • New grants identified and resolutions put forward for consideration
  • Boat and craft repairs carried out
  • Trailer warrants and registrations renewed
If you have any questions get in touch with Brett (027 949 2349)
Rashies, skull caps, beanies, hats and hooded towels can be purchased from ClubHub. If anyone wants anything before Christmas place your order TODAY ready for pick up at Nippers on Sunday 19th December. Only items that have been pre-ordered will be available to pick up. Last chance so get those orders in ASAP!
Togs - we have some in stock and are waiting on speedos and ladies’ bottoms. Hoping they will arrive in January 2022. All other clothing can be ordered from the CUS online store when they re-open on 12th January.

  • Cleaning - we all need to play a part in looking after our club, be it a quick clean or taking the rubbish out - don’t be shy in helping out!
  • Club Security - please ensure all doors are locked, lights are off and the alarm is set before leaving. Even when the club is open please be vigilant and if you see anything out of the ordinary don’t be afraid to ask questions. We've had a few intoxicated members of the public attempting to enter the club and we all need to keep an eye out.
  • Bar - please note that no Juniors are permitted in the bar at any time. If found they will be given three out of date Panheads to chop before being sent for a Bay Swim.
  • First Aid - a big shout out to Scott Hemsley who took mock first aid scenarios to a whole new level last week, Scott was masquerading as a parent in the club when he decided to go up a gear and tear a valve in his heart…. luckily we had a few quick thinking nurses on hand to spot this and deal with it promptly! Good to see you back on your feet mate! And to the rest who play patient during mock up’s it might be time to lift your game?
  • Donation - a massive thanks to Geoff Hall Plumbing who kindly donated a new BBQ to the club! Not only did he see the need for one, he went out and got it, assembled it and was even seen eating off it at the Nipper carnival on Sunday! Thanks Geoff, much appreciated.
  • Subs - are now overdue. A kindly reminder to those who haven’t paid to please get these sorted or approach our treasurer to arrange a payment plan. We do not want to stop you using the club from January 1st.
  • Missing - can anyone help Wil McDowell find his Open Men’s crew? Last reportedly seen in the Bar a month or so ago but haven’t been seen since……
  • Fundraising - keep an eye out for Melissa Hall selling raffle tickets. There's some great prizes and, like all raffles and fundraising, it all comes back into the club.
  • Gear - over the Christmas break we will be going through our craft gear. Any gear that doesn’t make the grade will be posted on the Facebook page for a first in first served collection.
  • Qualified Lifeguards - as a result of a lot of hard work by everyone involved, we have gained 27 Patrol Support and Surf Lifeguard Awards! These members will now be rostered on our weekend patrols – make sure you congratulate them and show them the ropes.
  • IRB Crewperson Module + VHF Radio - we will be hosting an IRB Crewperson Module and a Marine VHF Radio course at Titahi Bay in January (dates TBC). If you are interested in signing up for either of these, please await further information from Deborah Donkin – signup will be required.
  • Mass Refresher - last month we hosted a Mass Refresher + Qualifications Day at Titahi Bay which was a great success! Titahi Bay lifeguards were joined by guards from all over the Capital Coast to complete their annual refresher AND gain some extra awards, including Rock Rescue Training and Board Rescue Modules.
  • Intermediate Lifeguard School Announcement - this season two schools have been announced in exciting locations! One school will be held at Waipatiki Beach in the Hawkes Bay while the other location will be kept secret – no candidates will know where they are headed until the bus departs! Deborah Donkin will provide more information for those who hold the relevant qualifications to attend.
  • Himatangi Weekends - thanks to the lifeguards who indicated that they were interested in assisting Palmerston North SLSC with their volunteer patrols at Himatangi Beach. The Central Region team at SLSNZ are now  developing these weekends – including a ‘Wahine Weekend’ focused on hosting an all-female patrol with development opportunities whilst keeping the beach safe!
  • Benestar Link for all Members - Benestar is the counselling and wellbeing provider for SLSNZ, providing fully funded counselling and wellbeing resources to all active current members and their immediate families. Benestar have counsellors throughout New Zealand who can be selected and booked online by the user. More information is available at the following link:

Bronagh has the Craft Squad dialed in with some hard work being done! After a couple of local carnivals we saw three teams take on the Mount Monster challenge and again Titahi Bay were punching well above their weight! Congratulations to the Open Women (Bronagh, Nicole and Phoebe) who finished 2nd overall which is a huge effort! We also had two Under 19 mixed teams entered (Briana, Kai, Anna, Liam, James and Emma) who gave it their all and did us proud! A great foundation as we head into the post-Christmas sprint programme.

Congratulations also to Bronagh for her selection in the “Invitational”. She will join 'Team Foster' for the national event at Whangamata on the 31st January.
The Oceans Team are improving session to session with some even eying up the seniors for a shot at the title…It's great to see the group coming together and the encouragement they all give each other - this has had a direct impact on competition within the group and is proving infectious with parents jumping on board and joining the ride. It’s great to see these kids leading at carnivals and helping the wee ones on the beach.
A big thanks to Jacinta, Andy and Darrel for their help with the coaching too! With Oceans only about 10 weeks away we're looking forward to seeing what these kids can do. There’s heaps coming up for Oceans so keep a look out for updates moving forward!
Please keep the 28th January free for a quiz night fundraiser down the club, tickets out soon!
On the surf boat front, Titahi Bay continues to lead nationally in both numbers of crews and results. We are very lucky to have multiple NZ team and NZ title holders sweeping our crews, with Paul, Tim and Wil on the back of our crews and, with the rowing knowledge and competitive natures they possess, our crews do not know how lucky they are. Please continue to look after the gear and report any damaged or gear requests to Boat Captain Timmy.

In the first round of the national series at Lyall Bay we had the following results. Big ups to Satine, Alex and Liam for doubling up with 10 races to help other crews!
  • Under 19 Girls finished 1st
  • Under 19 Boys finished 1st
  • Under 23 Men finished 3rd
  • Under 23 Ladies finished 2nd
  • Open Men...🤷‍♀️
  • Open Women...🤷‍♀️
Keep an eye out for our newest crew the Titahi Bay-Bees who have been out on the water under the watchful eye of Kyle Lang, great to see Morgan, Kate, Kyle, Eleanor, Kaya!
The 2022 Nippers programme has well and truly started with around 130 nippers registered and already three Sunday sessions and two competitive carnivals. The first Sunday session came with the added excitement of a search after a missing person’s report was received – it was a great opportunity for our kids to see our Nipper coaches and lifeguards spring into action.

We’re two carnivals in and have had a fantastic turnout to both, with great results throughout all the age-groups. The highlight has been hosting the December Capital Coast carnival and running the iconic Bay Swim as an event for U11-U14 kids where we ended up with 91 Nippers in the race. This couldn’t have been done without the support of a massive lifeguard crew for the event – most of which were Nippers not so long ago.

Nippers cannot be run without the input of the “Nippers Village” and we are always blown away by the help and support that comes each week from our Nipper families – they’re always prepared to pitch in and our club culture is all the richer for their contribution. We’d really like to acknowledge and thank Michelle Sutton and Tracey Priest for all the hours of work they put in behind the scenes, thanks guys!
Have a safe and happy Christmas and we'll see you in the New Year!
