- Qualified Lifeguards - as a result of a lot of hard work by everyone involved, we have gained 27 Patrol Support and Surf Lifeguard Awards! These members will now be rostered on our weekend patrols – make sure you congratulate them and show them the ropes.
- IRB Crewperson Module + VHF Radio - we will be hosting an IRB Crewperson Module and a Marine VHF Radio course at Titahi Bay in January (dates TBC). If you are interested in signing up for either of these, please await further information from Deborah Donkin – signup will be required.
- Mass Refresher - last month we hosted a Mass Refresher + Qualifications Day at Titahi Bay which was a great success! - Intermediate Lifeguard School Announcement - this season two schools have been announced in exciting locations! One school will be held at Waipatiki Beach in the Hawkes Bay while the other location will be kept secret – no candidates will know where they are headed until the bus departs! Deborah Donkin will provide more information for those who hold the relevant qualifications to attend.
- Himatangi Weekends - thanks to the lifeguards who indicated that they were interested in assisting Palmerston North SLSC with their volunteer patrols at Himatangi Beach. The Central Region team at SLSNZ are now developing these weekends – including a ‘Wahine Weekend’ focused on hosting an all-female patrol with development opportunities whilst keeping the beach safe!

Bronagh has the Craft Squad dialed in with some hard work being done! After a couple of local carnivals we saw three teams take on the Mount Monster challenge and again Titahi Bay were punching well above their weight! Congratulations to the Open Women (Bronagh, Nicole and Phoebe) who finished 2nd overall which is a huge effort! We also had two Under 19 mixed teams entered (Briana, Kai, Anna, Liam, James and Emma) who gave it their all and did us proud! A great foundation as we head into the post-Christmas sprint programme.
Congratulations also to Bronagh for her selection in the “Invitational”. She will join 'Team Foster' for the national event at Whangamata on the 31st January.

The Oceans Team are improving session to session with some even eying up the seniors for a shot at the title…It's great to see the group coming together and the encouragement they all give each other - this has had a direct impact on competition within the group and is proving infectious with parents jumping on board and joining the ride. It’s great to see these kids leading at carnivals and helping the wee ones on the beach.
A big thanks to Jacinta, Andy and Darrel for their help with the coaching too! With Oceans only about 10 weeks away we're looking forward to seeing what these kids can do. There’s heaps coming up for Oceans so keep a look out for updates moving forward!
Please keep the 28th January free for a quiz night fundraiser down the club, tickets out soon!

On the surf boat front, Titahi Bay continues to lead nationally in both numbers of crews and results. We are very lucky to have multiple NZ team and NZ title holders sweeping our crews, with Paul, Tim and Wil on the back of our crews and, with the rowing knowledge and competitive natures they possess, our crews do not know how lucky they are. Please continue to look after the gear and report any damaged or gear requests to Boat Captain Timmy.
In the first round of the national series at Lyall Bay we had the following results. Big ups to Satine, Alex and Liam for doubling up with 10 races to help other crews!
- Under 19 Girls finished 1st
- Under 19 Boys finished 1st
- Under 23 Men finished 3rd
- Under 23 Ladies finished 2nd
- Open Men...🤷♀️
- Open Women...🤷♀️

The 2022 Nippers programme has well and truly started with around 130 nippers registered and already three Sunday sessions and two competitive carnivals. The first Sunday session came with the added excitement of a search after a missing person’s report was received – it was a great opportunity for our kids to see our Nipper coaches and lifeguards spring into action.
We’re two carnivals in and have had a fantastic turnout to both, with great results throughout all the age-groups. The highlight has been hosting the December Capital Coast carnival and running the iconic Bay Swim as an event for U11-U14 kids where we ended up with 91 Nippers in the race. This couldn’t have been done without the support of a massive lifeguard crew for the event – most of which were Nippers not so long ago.
Nippers cannot be run without the input of the “Nippers Village” and we are always blown away by the help and support that comes each week from our Nipper families – they’re always prepared to pitch in and our club culture is all the richer for their contribution. We’d really like to acknowledge and thank Michelle Sutton and Tracey Priest for all the hours of work they put in behind the scenes, thanks guys!
