Hi Clubbies - welcome to the first club newsletter for 2016! It's been a busy year so far and, if January is anything to go by, we're going to have a fantastic second half of the season! This edition is packed full of recent events and results from various surf sport competitions. Make sure you check out what's coming up on the calendar and get excited for a whole lot of new merchandise available soon!
Surf Sport Camp. Eight girls headed away to Gisborne for a surf camp with Midway SLSC and to compete in the Gisborne Senior Champs and Central Region Champs. After an impressive day at the Gissy Champs the team enjoyed a rest day then kicked off a week long camp that included up to three training sessions a day. These included fitness and skills sessions and training with the Midway squad. The girls got a lot out of training in the large clean sets and looked forward to competing at Centrals to see their improvement and how they stacked up against other clubbies in the region. Results from both the Gissy Champs and Central Region Champs can be found below in the Results section. Thanks to Brooky for the camp updates while the team were away!
Wellington Representative Team. Three Titahi Bay clubbies were selected for the Wellington representative team and will be competing at the New Zealand Rep Challenge this weekend in Mount Maunganui. Good luck to Bronagh, Luisa and coach Dan. You can read more about the event here.

New Zealand Team announcement. At the conclusion of the Whangamata surf boat event the crews who are to represent New Zealand in the Trans-Tasman Surf Boat Rowing Challenge were named. The U23 Women (Tim, Georgia, Tracy, Kathryn and Tessa) were named as the NZ Womens Development Crew and the Open Men (Wil, Chris, Jordan, Brett and Jono) were named as the NZ Men's Crew. Both crews will travel with the NZ team to compete at Shellharbour, Sydney on the 20th of February.
Round 2 - NZ Surf Boat Series (Whangamata) - full results
Four crews represented Titahi Bay at the second round of the NZ Surf Boat Series. Conditions were less than ideal as a storm blew through the Coromandel but the event referees pushed on and the cans were laid a fair distance from the beach. It was a testing day for all rowers and sweeps but Titahi Bay came out with the following results: U19 Men = 1st, U23 Women = 2nd, U23 Men = 3rd, Open Men = 2nd.
Gisborne Senior Championships (Midway Beach) - full results
Eight competitors from the craft arena headed away to Gisborne and competed at the Gisborne Senior Championships earlier in January. This event kicked off their week long surf camp with Midway SLSC. The athletes were stoked with how they got on and had an awesome time competing against some strong East Coast competitors!
Central Region Champs (Waimarama) - full results.
At the conclusion of the sports camp mentioned above, the competitors traveled to the Hawkes Bay for the Central Region's biggest senior carnival. They were joined by other Titahi Bay clubbies and yet another strong day on the beach was enjoyed by competitors and supporters alike.
Congratulations to the team of Titahi Bay Juniors who took to Oakura Beach to attend the first ever Central Region Junior Championships! It was fantastic to see the kids racing hard in testing surf conditions - a perfect warm up for the upcoming Oceans'16 (U14 Nationals) in Mount Maunganui next month. Some awesome results, check them out at the link below!
The day after the Central Region Juniors Championships, Riversdale hosted their annual Nipper Carnival which a team of Titahi Bay Nippers attended too. Again some awesome results on the day! We don't have any formal results but you can read about the event in this article published in the Wairarapa Times.
The Eastern Region Championships are on this weekend - good luck to the team competing at what is the largest regional competition in the country.
The NZ Representative Challenge takes place on the Monday after the ERC's. Three of our clubbies are in the Open Wellington team - good luck!
Surf Sport starts to ramp up at this end of the season - check out the Important Dates below for what's next on the calendar.
Patrols keep ticking over until March 27th 2016. Please make sure you attend your patrol and if you can't, get someone to cover you. All in all, patrols have been going smoothly and our lifeguards continue to do a great job on the beach.
In the Spotlight: Dan Grant
Dan joins us at Titahi Bay as the senior craft coach. Dan has a long history of coaching at both club and district/regional level and this season has been named as the coach of the Wellington Open team who will compete at the New Zealand Representative Challenge on the 1st of February. At the time of his interview he was away with eight TBSLSC clubbies at a training camp and we're wondering if they had a bit of influence over some of his answers...
