Surf Club News

Hi Clubbies

Well, with another successful summer at the beach coming to a close we are pleased to bring you our final newsletter for the season, jam-packed with great results and successes from many Clubbies!
Ocean's 14:
Fifteen Titahi Bay u'14 competitors headed off to Mount Maunganui for the New Zealand Ocean Athletes competition at the end of February. The group achieved an outstanding level of representation, racing hard and many were rewarded with spots in semi-finals, finals and top ten finishes. Great results from all involved!
Exceptional results by competitors Caitlin Clarke and Jess Jenkins: Caitlin won a bronze medal in the surf race while Jess won bronze in the u'11 beach sprints- congratulations to both girls!
SLSNZ Nationals:
A thirty-strong team headed off to Ohope for the National Champs recently, including 5 surf boat crews and a strong contingent of board and ski competitors.
Among those in the ski arena was Erin Taylor, an Olympic sprint kayaker and talented ski paddler. Erin teamed up with three-time gold medal winner Marty McDowell to take out the mixed double ski race on the final day of racing.

Erin says: "I was stoked to race with Marty! We always thought it would be a fun race to do so it's cool it's in the programme now. Racing with a guy is pretty epic because they're faster and you feel way more powerful! Racing for Titahi bay was really cool too, everyone was so friendly and welcoming and made me feel part of the team!"

We would love to see Erin back in Titahi Bay colours defending the mixed double ski title next year!
As well as first place in the mixed ski race, Marty McDowell also took out the open mens ski race and partnered up with clubbie Todd Grace to win the mens double ski race. Congratulations to Marty for this fantastic achievement!
Medals were awarded to the following competitors:
  • Martyn McDowell: GOLD open mens ski race, GOLD open mens double ski race, GOLD open mixed double ski race
  • Todd Grace: GOLD open mens double ski race
  • Erin Taylor: GOLD open mixed double ski race
  • Angus Hermansson: BRONZE u'16 beach sprint
  • Open Mens A Crew: BRONZE short course
