Newsletter - May 2014

Hello MAGC Community,
Remember us? It's been a little while, but we're back and filled with awesomeness! The MAGC Newsletter is being re-launched (by yours truly, Heba Kandil) and it will be exactly what you are looking for in a newsletter: focusing on opportunities for you! There will be updates about workshops, calls for entries, exhibition openings, grant opportunities and just generally cool things happening relating to metal. So you're going to want to stay tuned.

A little about myself: I am a recent graduate from OCAD University and have setup an at home studio with two other designers which includes a woodshop, screenprinting, moldmaking and upholestry. I get really excited about well made things and I look forward to sharing that excitement with you, and in turn, the whole MAGC community.

Speaking of which: We will be launching “Fresh off the Bench”, so whenever you've made something that you think is super fly, share it with us and we can get the whole community excited about it! I shall keep you posted on how to send us that info.
There will also be a greater emphasis on making this newsletter as relevant to our national community as possible, and to do that, we need to hear from you! If you’re showing work, tell us about it and we’ll advertise for you! If you’ve been to an exhibition that blew your mind, we want to hear about it! We want to stay as connected as possible, so don't by shy - let us know what's going on in your neck of the woods.
Now, let’s get to the good stuff...
Call For Entry
The 2014 Exhibition in Print has been launched, and you’re gonna want to apply! It’s called Conceal/Reveal and is focused on illusion. Curated by the lovely Ken Vickerson the submission deadline is September 30th, 2014 with an entry fee of $35. All the details are on the MAGC website.
Grant Application
Craft Ontario (formely OCC) hosts their annual Craft Awards, of which members can apply and are eligible for grants up to $7,500, so that may be something to put on your radar. Applications are due Friday June 20, 2014, and there are grants available for everyone from students to established makers. The application package and types of awards are all online.
Exhibition Opening
For those in Toronto who have yet to check out Zilberschmuck’s Absolute exhibition at 18Karat, make sure to check it out soon because the show ends May 31st.  It is the special 10 year anniversary of Cheryl Fraser’s exceptionally curated shows, the work is gorgeous and the show is not to be missed.
Well, I’d say that’s it for the first newsletter. I look forward to keeping all you lovely makers out there updated about the fantastic things happening in our community.

- Cheers -
