Happy Summer, Ocean-Lovers!

We at All One Ocean have been very busy!  We were surprised to discover and are thrilled to share that we have been featured in Scientific American.

Scroll down to read about the launch of our Education Program, an update following last month's Community Meeting, musings from Hallie as well as a list of our upcoming events like Okeanos Intimate. Hallie and Lauren will be the featured speakers before the August 17th performance of this not-to-be missed show.  We are very grateful for your support in All One Ocean's far-reaching work. AOO Launches Education Program
On an AOO-led clean up of Muir Beach on Memorial Day Weekend, Marin Academy students collected an estimated 24 pounds of trash.
This past school year saw the beginning of All One Ocean's Education Program with presentations to high school classes in San Francisco and Marin Counties.  Students at Saint Ignatius and Marin Academy were engaged with the hour-long, interactive presentations on the challenges and solutions to garbage in the Ocean including our very own Beach Clean Up Stations.

Being able to touch and identify (most of) the trash they collected really made an impact on nine students from Marin Academy as they collected an estimated 24 pounds of trash at Muir Beach following the presentation at their school.  If you or a group you know would like to sign up for an AOO presentation, please contact us.
AOO Hosts First-Ever Community Meeting & Beach Clean Up
Clean up buddies, Hallie and Doug, with their beach clean up data card (above).  Annie and Pamela relax after cleaning up Muir Beach (right).

Thanks to all who joined us at our June 12th Community Meeting & Beach Clean Up. The sun shone warmly down on our group of 15 as we gathered at Muir Beach to  clean up, share our current news and make plans for the future of AOO.

We look forward to seeing you at our next Community Meeting to be held on Saturday, August 24th from 10:00am to 12:00pm at Rodeo Beach in Sausalito (we will meet on the beach side of the footbridge).

Beach clean up supplies and light snacks will be provided. Please bring your water bottle and your friends. We strongly encourage carpooling which will be coordinated by Pamela; she can be reached at Pamela@AllOneOcean.org or 415.310.0274.

Reweaving the Web of Life:
Reflections from AOO Founder, Hallie Austen Iglehart
One of my favorite quotes is from E.B. White, author of Charlotte’s Web: “I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve (or save) the world and a desire to enjoy (or savor) the world.  This makes it hard to plan the day.”

I think of this as one of the conundrums of our times. How do we enjoy all the marvels of this precious planet as we are aware of the dangers confronting our Ocean, Air and Earth? Yet it is very important that we nourish our souls and the soul of the world with appreciation and celebration. To me, part of the essence of All One Ocean is that we unite both of our tendencies, saving the world while savoring it, and savoring it while saving it. Both of these feed one another.

Activists generally recognize that people are moved to protect what they love.  And so, with our Beach Clean Up Stations and events, we take time to revel in the wonder and beauty of our Ocean, even while we are leaning over to pick up yet another cigarette butt. While we are planning how to raise money, we take time to appreciate that we are able to do this work and to celebrate one another’s efforts. We take time to dance after sending an important email, to look out the window at the sky, to take a deep breath and appreciate who is with us. Are there other ways can we savor the world while saving it?

With gratitude to all,
Hallie
