June 20 is World Refugee DayIt is a day to raise awareness of the men, women and children who are unable to return to their homes out of fear for their lives and liberty.

No one is a refugee by choice. Through your support, PWS&D is providing humanitarian aid and care to refugees worldwide, protecting their rights and helping Presbyterian congregations sponsor refugees to resettle in Canada.

A bulletin insert is available to raise awareness of World Refugee Day within your congregation.
Four million Syrian refugees have poured across the borders of neighbouring countries and are in need of humanitarian assistance.

Donations to PWS&D helped Zakaria secure food and shelter for his family in Lebanon after fleeing Syria. Despite the uncertainties he faced, Zakaria was determined to help other Syrian refugees in need of assistance. Read his incredible story.

You can support this ongoing response through PWS&D’s Be a Peacemaker campaign.

New Beginnings for Refugees in Canada

“Although many of the churches in our presbytery are small—as partners together—we have been able to do something really meaningful.”

These are the words of Liz Stark, a member of the Pickering Presbytery Mission and Outreach Committee, who has been working on the Pickering Presbytery Refugee Project with support from PWS&D.

When the idea of sponsoring a Syrian family was brought to the presbytery, there was an outpouring of generosity from churches. The presbytery has raised $143,190.77—enough money to sponsor not one but five Syrian families escaping violent conflict.

“All along I have felt blessed by being able to take part in this sponsorship,” shares Liz. “This project has been about partnership. This has yielded much positive goodwill.”

By working together in faith and partnership, the Pickering Presbytery is helping Syrian refugees on their journey toward peace.

New Opportunities to Respond

In 2013, the Canadian government launched a new way to sponsor refugees: the Blended Visa Office Referred (BVOR) refugee program. With BVOR, both the government and sponsors (covered under Sponsorship Agreements – like that of The Presbyterian Church in Canada) contribute to the financial support of the refugees over a one-year period.

To learn more about the BVOR program and how your congregation can support refugees, contact Rob Shropshire PWS&D’s Refugee Sponsorship Coordinator or call 1-800-619-7301 ext. 249.
