Dear Members,
I hope that this edition of the Chukka Chat finds all our members and supporters returning to a degree of normality, and looking forward to polocrosse recommencing for 2020,  in whatever way, shape, and form it will take. This edition includes the current guidelines and advice for clubs and members, however, as has been the way for the past ten weeks or so, the situation evolves quickly, and I urge everyone to keep informed of the most current communication.
State Council has discussed the plan to returning to practices in the first instance, which will not commence until at least Phase 3 of the WA roadmap. Council will meet again in mid-June, and is maintaining communications with the PAA to ensure that we can throw the ball in as soon as possible. There will be restrictions in place for some time, so polocrosse may look a bit different, but we will get there. I thank each and every one of our clubs and members for their patience during this time.
We are continuing to work with Andrew Kikeros in both supporting clubs to reconnect with their communities and members, and to develop our Strategic Plan – although it is certainly taking a different shape to the one we envisaged back in January! Kim has also been working closely with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries in applying for and accessing all available financial and practical assistance to ensure that the PAWA is best placed to “survive, revive, and thrive” in these times. If any clubs require assistance with their 2020 planning, and would like to speak with Andrew regarding this, please contact Kim to arrange this.
The recent PAA AGM was held via Zoom, which worked very successfully, and demonstrated the financial and timesaving benefits for the more isolated states of utilising the technology. We look forward to seeing all our counterparts across Australia in person, but also look forward to an increased use of video conferencing. Congratulations to Sandra Weston on her re-election, and to Charlie Brook on his initial term to the Board. We look forward to working with the PAA on all fronts.
Thank you once again to everyone involved in polocrosse at all levels across Western Australia for your patience and understanding as work to getting back out on the field in a safe and timely manner.

Pip Crook

Strange times, but don't be discouraged polocrosse is coming soon!

Our recommendation is to keep training at home with rackets, work on those skills and your horsemanship and keep your ponies in so you are ready when we get the green light!

Clubs are advised to read through the content in this COVID-19 INFORMATION SHEET below to prepare everyone for training in phase 3.

The PAA anticipates that by phase 3 we can go to contact and will be covered under insurance, but as this is a moving beast we await their directive for insurance purposes.
The plan attached helps clubs check off their requirements and then in turn make them clear to members. It is also useful to use to submit to local government so they are aware of your clubs plans when returning to play.

The fact sheet provides the guidelines we will need to work under as stipulated by the government. We strongly encourage clubs to see what their local government requirements are for using facilities and if any clubs have any problems or concerns in doing so please contact either our consultant Andrew Kikeros ( or the SEO ( ) we are here to help you.

Some key points willl be a register upon entry of the facility. (So we know who has turned up) Sanitising stations for entering and exiting fields and sanitising of balls and players. Social distancing once off horses and recommended cleaning of gear.
State Council will meet again the week of the 12th June just before phase 3 and we will keep everyone updated.

It’s certainly a challenge for us all dealing with an experience that most of us probably never imagined we would see in our lifetime. In saying this the PAA held their AGM via zoom.
I believe everyone who attended was impressed with how smoothly it went. A big shout out to Gillian Meppem for her time bringing it all together.
The redacted minutes will be distributed shortly, however, there are a few things that need to be communicated to you all and can be shared with your members.

Les and Robyn Fraser were awarded PAA Life Membership. Their dedication to our sport is remarkable. You might want to send them an email to congratulate them. Les's email is

REMINDER - Member Protection Information Officers

Each club should have a nominated MPIO. Once online component is complete please email your certificate to This is soon going to be part of legislation in sport as they conclude the inquest in to child protection.

(MPIOs) play an important and positive role in providing a safe, fair and inclusive environment. An MPIO is a source of information about a person’s rights, responsibilities and options when managing an issue or complaint. They can also provide information and advice to sport administrators and complaint handlers regarding the Member Protection Policy of that sport.
The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries invites members of the sport and recreation industry to register for the Member Protection Information Officer course. The course is specifically designed for people who wish to be a Member Protection Information Officer in their sport and recreation organisations and clubs. Please note priority will be given to representatives from State Sporting Associations.
The MPIO course comprises of two stages: an online prerequisite and then a face-to-face workshop. State sport and recreation associations and clubs are invited to nominate persons from within their organisation to attend.
Prior to attending the face-to-face workshop. The online component takes approximately 4 hours to complete and covers:
• The MPIO role
• Complaint resolution procedures
• Member protection and the law
• Child protection
• Harassment and discrimination
• Ethical and practical considerations.
