Sylvan Lake Newsbyte: Volunteers Needed-Lead & Copper Testing

Sylvan Lake Newsbyte

We need your help!

The recent issues with drinking water in Michigan have prompted several changes in testing requirements for drinking water.  One of those requirements is testing for lead and copper.
We need the help of five (5) additional residents to assist in the recently mandated increase in sample requirements for Lead and Copper testing in our water system.
To meet the testing criteria, we are looking for homes that have copper plumbing with lead solder installed before July 1988.  If your home meets the criteria, and you are willing to assist by taking a water sample by mid-August, please email and give us your name, address, type of plumbing, and contact information.
As you know, lead in drinking water has recently been in the spotlight (Flint water crisis).  Because of that, there has been a dramatic change in the testing of lead and copper in water systems across the State.
Is this additional testing required because we have issues with our water?
NO. Your water is fine.   We began testing for lead and copper in 1992 and were required to collect samples from 5 different locations.  We completed our first round of sampling and then tested again 6 months later.  When those tests came back negative, we conducted tests on an annual basis.   In 2002, the testing frequency was reduced to every three (3) years.
Because of the increased awareness and potential issues of lead in drinking water, we are now required to collect samples from 10 different locations on an annual basis to confirm the corrosion control method used at the Great Lakes Water Authority’s water treatment plants continues to work effectively in our city’s distribution system. Our past results have consistently been below action levels with no indication of lead present.
