Actions are hotting up on Safcei's No Nukes Campaign. Look out for Pope Francis's edict for Climate Change Action. Celebrate Earth Keeper Day. Ian Player's inspiring memorial service. Faith and veganism.

Dear Earth Keeper,

“About time!” our theme for February is inspired by Dr Ian Player’s reply when he was asked what he thought of a multi-faith organisation committed to caring for the Earth.  Pope Francis would agree as he writes his climate action edict to mobilize the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics in 2015. SAFCEI believes it is about time our government came clean on their nuclear energy `deals' and have initiated legal action. Help stop nukes and prevent a meltdown of our democrasy. It is also time to celebrate.  SAFCEI is launching Earth Keeper Day on the weekend of 14 &15 February as an annual event for people of faith to reconnect with the sacred gift of life on Earth. For an inspiring story about values and compassion for all living beings read Frank Molteno’s journey to veganism. What is your `about time’ action for 2015?

WHY are certain people so keen to compromise our sovereignty and embroil South Africans in complicated, risky, expensive, extremely-long-term contracts with another state, while keeping us from knowing anything about the ‘deal’.” Support SAFCEi’s No to Nukes campaign.  Read more

Frank Molteno on compassion & veganism

You ask why I care. I ask myself why it took me so long to piece together the story of what happens to food on its way to my plate.  Frank’s compassion stems from believing that there is no ‘us’ and ‘them’ but an interconnected web of beings, human and non-human, each with their roles to play in God’s miracle of life.  Read more

Pope’s edict for Climate Action is a big deal

Look out for Pope Francis's climate action edict, coming soon. It is “amongst the highest levels of a pope’s authority,” and aims to mobilize the world's 1.2 billion Catholics. As Earth Keepers, we need to look at which of our activities produce GHG and change for life. Lent starting on 18 February is an opportunity for Christians to Carbon Fast. Read more

Are you ready for Ian Player’s baton?

In a deeply moving eulogy to Dr Ian Player, his long time friend Dr Ian McCallum said: “When Ian spoke, it was like listening to a firm, but subdued roar … a kind of territorial call.  He was a voice and fighter for the natural inhabitants of the wild, not only for their sake, but for the sake of the human species as well.
