HGC is Gearing Up for Board of Directors Election

Your co-op needs you. Consider running for the Hudson Grocery Cooperative Board of Directors!

The HGC Board of Directors election will be held at the Annual Owner Meeting held in November. We will be electing up to five Directors and two Alternate Directors, and any co-op owner can be nominated to serve.

The volunteer Board is made up of five to nine co-op owners who each serve 3-year terms. HGC Directors commit to attending regular and special meetings fully prepared, sharing ideas, maintaining appropriate confidentiality, serving on committees, pursuing Board educational opportunities, and following the co-op Board policies. HGC Board meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month.

The main duties of the Board of Directors are to hire/monitor the General Manager, communicate the needs and desires of the membership into a “plan”, and make sound financial decisions for the co-op. Directors also get the satisfaction of serving a growing organization that provides the community with quality products and education. Board members have a voice in shaping the future of the co-op while working with a group of people who share a commitment to a democratic process and a sustainable local economy.

If you are considering applying to be a candidate, HGC asks that you attend one of the following Board Candidate Orientation Sessions:

  • Thursday, September 18th 6-7;
  • Tuesday, September 30th 6-7; or
  • Saturday, October 11th 9:30-10:30.

The meetings will be held at the Hudson Area Library at 700 First Street. The sessions are open to anyone interested in learning more (you need not be a HGC member yet – there is still time to join HGC before the election).

If you are interested in running for election, please take a look the Board Candidate Application Packet located on HGC’s website.

HGC volunteers (l-r) Kristin Borup, Erica Perry, Sarah Atkins, and Greg Lew at the St. Croix RiverFest.

HGC Booth at St. Croix RiverFest

Four volunteers enjoyed time and music in Lakefront Park on Thursday, July 17 at the St. Croix River Fest.  Co-op owners Kristin Borup, Erica Perry, Sarah Atkins, and Greg Lew chatted with concert-goers about our efforts to bring a cooperatively owned grocery store to the downtown area.  Many brochures were distributed, and the co-op gained at least one new owner as a result of the evening!  One volunteer noted that was fun to get to know other co-op owners by working together at the table.  Another wrote the next day, “I had a blast, and I look forward to talking to new potential owners again soon.”

HGC Author Event and New Book Club

HGC has partnered with Chapter 2 Books for an author event on Thursday, November 20, at 7 p.m. at the Chapter 2 Book Store located in the lower level of 226 Locust Street in Hudson. Atina Diffley will be visiting to discuss her book, Turn Here Sweet Corn.

We are proposing a new monthly book club that focuses on topics exploring what we eat and where our food comes from; including cooking, growing, sustainability, health, organic and local foods... and much more. The plan is to open this monthly book club to the community; however, we are seeking a core group of members who are interested in meeting monthly beginning the 3rd Thursday in January from 6-8 p.m.

If you are interested in joining a monthly book club, please email Ramona at ramona.robinson@ymail.com

Share HGC Facebook with Your Friends

Sarah Atkins, HGC Board Member
Today, I had the opportunity to visit the Hudson Grocery Co-op’s Facebook page.  While I was there, I noticed on the left-hand side of the page there is a spot that says, “Invite your friends to like the Hudson Grocery Cooperative.”  I went through my list of friends and for of those that live in the Hudson area, I typed, “Please like!” and clicked “Invite.”  It took me less than a minute!  By that afternoon, the co-op had 14 more followers!  I am sure that for some of them this was their first time hearing about our efforts to open a cooperatively-owned grocery store in Hudson.  Will you invite your friends?  It’s so easy!

The HGC Board of Directors is comprised of HGC owners who voluntarily serve as directors. The HGC Board meets monthly on the second Tuesday on each month at 7 p.m. at 701 2nd Street, Hudson, WI.

Recent board work includes a review and updates to the HGC bylaws, lead by the Steering Committee. The amendments to the bylaws will be presented at the Annual Owners Meeting in November.

The Marketing Committee continues to find ways to get the word out about HGC’s efforts to bring a grocery co-op to downtown Hudson. New strategies include train as HGC ambassadors for one-on-one discussions with potential owners and presentations to groups. From civic groups, social groups, to volunteer organizations and just a group of friends, HGC can make group presentations. Let the HGC board know if you would like a presentation at your organization.

On a not-so-happy note, director Kathy Tobias recently resigned from her position on the HGC board. The board is very grateful to Kathy for her valuable contributions to HGC. In addition to her past service on the board, Kathy remains active on the ownership and volunteer committee, the marketing committee, as well as helping at special events. We will miss Kathy on the board, but are glad that she is still available to volunteer for committee work.

Your co-op has upcoming events, as well as a couple of new and ongoing initiatives.  Volunteer time is needed with each of these items.  Whether you can only volunteer one time or you can tackle a larger project, your co-op needs you!

Upcoming Events and Volunteer Opportunities:

1.  Spirit of the St. Croix Art Festival, Lakefront Park on Saturday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, September 28 from 10 p.m. to 4 p.m.  We need numerous volunteers to fill shifts manning the booth.  We will be painting with vegetables with the children, and speaking to the parents about the co-op.  If you can spare some time on one or both of the Art Festival days, please sign up by contacting me.  Training will be provided.

2.  Brochure distribution to downtown businesses occurs monthly on the second Saturday of the month.  We need four more volunteers for Saturday, October 11.  We will meet at 701 Second St at 10 a.m.

3.  We need a new editor for our co-op’s newsletter, The Beet.  This is a monthly task to be distributed on the second Saturday of the month, and it is accomplished using MailChimp.

4.  New Board Directors will be elected at the Annual meeting is in November.   All owners are invited to come to the Annual Meeting to hear co-op updates, vote for new Directors, and mingling with fellow Owners.  A date and location will be selected soon.  Be sure to come!

New & Ongoing Initiatives to Find New Owners:

Let’s all be shopping at the Hudson Grocery Cooperative in 2015!  We are planning on meeting one-to-one and also in group settings to spread the word about HGC and sign up new owners.  We are at 227 members!  300 is right around the corner and that will be a catalyst to get us moving forward faster!  We are still looking for more HGC Ambassadors.  You will meet face-to-face in one-to-one meetings with potential new owners. Training will be provided.

Thanks in advance for your time.  Now let's grow this cooperative!
