The story of Chiaki and Studio FUN

My name is Chiaki O’Brien. I have a home studio called Studio FUN in Chaska, MN. I teach both SAORI Weaving and Bengala Dye. I teach not only in the studio, but also off-sites.

I have been having FUN sharing what I love and meeting people through teaching and, of course, it is so fun to create one-of-a-kind items myself!

I met  with the “fiber” world in 1996 when I started taking SAORI Weaving classes in Japan. Since then, I have been fun with fiber of many kinds such as needle felting and stitching. SAORI taught me how much fun it is to explore, create and be creative.

I met Dawn from Anoka Fiber Works last fall at the Fall Fiber Festival. She took a Bengala Dye class from me. That’s how AFW and I got connected. After that I started selling my work at their shop. I really love to make connections like this!  In the shop, you’ll see some small woven pins, Bengala Dyed scarves, Bengala Stenciled tote bags and some needle felted items. Hopefully I’d like to offer items seasonally, so please check it out!

Very recently, I again started learning how to spin. In the near future, I’d love to make my own “art yarn” and create something fun with it! Thank you, Mary, from AFW for helping to find the right wheel for me.

Other than working with fiber, I am a Japanese Taiko drumming performer.  Taiko allows me to go to places such as schools and festivals to perform.  Though I never played Taiko in Japan, this art form gives me the opportunity to introduce my own culture.  Doing fiber works and playing Taiko drums keeps me busy and balanced. There is cross over and I find inspiration between them.  I don’t know what leads me to the next step, but for now, I can’t stop any of these OR chocolate!
