His name was Brad.

I was a junior in high school and we had just moved to Lansing, Michigan from Tampa, Florida and Brad took me under his wing. For two years, Brad came to my football games, invited me out for milkshakes, and even gave me an internship.

He was the youth minister at my church, so you could argue he was just doing his job, but it felt like more than that. He took extra time to help me through the drama of my high school relationships and to gently coach me on my often-reckless behavior. Most of all he gave me opportunity to lead. He took the risk to let me be responsible for what seemed liked serious projects when I was completely unproven.

I am guessing that many of us have someone like that in our lives. Maybe it was a coach or teacher who took the time to believe in us. At a workshop two years ago some of us learned that these are call I–C–N–U conversations. It is when someone takes the time to encourage the potential they see in us to do great things.

Around Christ’s Church we talk a lot about taking next steps, I think a key ingredient to taking these steps is to have someone help us believe that we are capable of next steps. We need people who really believe that we can improve.

These kind of relationships don’t just happen. They take time and intentionality. I believe the best environment we have for these relationships to grow is in our Community Groups. These are small groups of people that meet regularly for the sole purpose of trying to help each other grow.
