Spike Patterns May Help Identify
Networks Generating Epileptic Seizures

Patients with epilepsy can spend days or weeks undergoing highly invasive pre-surgical evaluation. But a UR CTSI Academic Research Track trainee hopes his recent research findings could someday lead to a better and shorter evaluation for these patients. Read the full story at UR CTSI Stories Blog.

UR CTSI Seminar Series

The first seminar of the academic year is entitled, “Machine Learning Based Mediation Analysis: Application in a Study of Birthweight,” presented by Ashkan Ertefaie, Ph.D., assistant professor, Department of Biostatistics and Computational Biology and a UR CTSI pilot awardee. Community-Based Participatory
Research Training Program

The purpose of this program is to train University of Rochester researchers (faculty, trainees and students) and community members in research using community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles. Participants will form research teams to develop and submit proposals for the CBPR Pipeline-to-Pilot Awards.

The training runs from September 2019 through April 2020, and is facilitated by community partners and University of Rochester researchers. Program sessions will take place on Tuesday evenings, 5:30 – 8:00 pm at various locations, and there is no cost to participants. Contact Indrani Singh with questions and to request any accommodations. Register by today, Monday August 26.

Thruway Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Collaborative Conference

The focus of this conference is on opportunities and challenges in research and clinical collaboration. Abstracts from any of the associated fields of clinical, supportive care, translational or basic science research are welcome. All those submitting abstracts from the Thruway Consortium and UNYTE institutions will have an opportunity to present a poster. Submit abstract by Tuesday, October 1 to Gladys Magee. Roc Health Data Shows
Higher Obesity Rate Across our Region

Data from the Rochester Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) show that the obesity rate in our region is 41.9%, which is higher than the national average (39.8%) as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Learn more at RocHealthData.

UR Grant Writing Seminar Series

This series of five training workshops assists graduate students and postdocs tackle trainee-level grants. There will be time to write, confer with other attendees and receive feedback on your work. The first session will cover, “The Nuts and Bolts of Grant Writing,” with Elaine Smolock, Ph.D., director of Writing Services and Grant Development. Upstate New York I-Corps Node
Short Course Program

The NSF I-Corps Upstate New York (UNY) Node is offering a Short Course program for researchers interested in exploring the market potential of their work and learning entrepreneurial skills. The University of Rochester Ain Center for Entrepreneurship will host this free two-week program from October 25 through November 8. It is geared toward faculty, doctoral candidates and post-docs.
