As the holiday season gears up, it's time to think about how you'll thank your volunteers. Come prepared to share with the group your #1 creative idea for saying "We appreciate you!" (Remember, DOVIA can be a great resource. Click here for 101+ Ways to Thank Volunteers.)

Important Metric in Evaluating Volunteer Engagement

An important metric for gauging your success in retention is to look at how long each volunteer stays with your organization compared to the commitment made by each volunteer at the start of their service.

A high percentage of volunteers initially enter organizations through a short-term activity. If we used the common method of judging retention by duration of service, these folks would inappropriately show up in our records as “not retained” because they only stayed a short time. But that’s exactly what we agreed to with them!

When you recruit and interview new volunteers, do you explicitly talk about the length of commitment you are seeking? The unspoken assumption is that we will be together until we no longer want to be. You may be assuming volunteers intended to remain with you indefinitely when, in fact, all along they had a much shorter timeframe in mind.
