Swan Sardinia Challenge delivers a spectacular celebration of sailing

Swan Sardinia Challenge

Villasimius (ITA), 31 May -4 June, 2022

Four days of intense racing in the spectacular setting of southeast Sardinia came to a conclusion on Saturday 4th with the final places decided at the Swan Sardinia Challenge.

The Swan Sardinia Challenge was able to celebrate a successful regatta at what was a new venue for the Nations League, with the Marina di Villasimius providing a warm welcome alongside the support provided by the Regione Sardegna, the town of Villasimius and the Marinedi Group.

Marcus Brennecke's well sailed Hatari emerged at the top of the ClubSwan 50 leaderboard, holding off persistent and determined challenges from Louis Balcaen's Balthasar and August Schram on Stella Maris.

Meanwhile a string of five back-to-back race victories in the ultra-modern ClubSwan 36 class helped Richard Thompson's Black Seal secure a well-deserved though tight win ahead of Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio's G-Spot – who had won the ClubSwan Racing season's opening event in Tuscany in April – and Edoardo and Vanni Pavesio's Fra Martina.

The Swan 45 class was a competitive all Italian affair which saw all three boats competing constantly changing position. Claudio Terrieri's Blue Sky pipped Stefano Masi's Ulika by a single point, with Luca Locatelli's Thetis, which had taken two race wins, only two points adrift.

In the Nations League standings Germany had 28 points, four points clear of Italy thanks to Hatari's endeavours backed up by Sonke Meier-Sawatzki's fifth placed ClubSwan 50 Niramo, with Monaco in third place with 16 points ahead of Belgium and Great Britain – tied on 15 points – in the 11-country table.

RACING

PalmaVela

Palma de Mallorca (ESP), 29 April - 3 May, 2022

Congratulations to ClubSwan 42 Pez de Abril, overall winner in the ClubSwan 42 class, and, Elena Nova, overall winner in ORC 2.

"It's been a complete regatta in the sense that we have had all kinds of winds. And it has been really gorgeous. We have been able to improve more and more as a team and that is what has made the difference." - José María Meseguer, ClubSwan 42 Pez de Abril.

"It was a little bit unlucky for our class that we only managed three races, as most had four or five, and so I think that if we had done more races then it would not have been the same for us, it would have been much more even. If there were five races then Plan B or M8 could have beaten us." - Nacho Postigo, navigator on ClubSwan 42 Elena Nova

More than 50 yachts registered for Rolex Swan Cup 2022

Porto Cervo, 11-18 September 2022

Fifty-four Swans are ready to attend the event in Porto Cervo.
Among them the Swan S&S 43 KOKKOLA with the owner Vittorio Ghizzoni, who took part in the first edition of the Rolex Swan Cup in 1994 and 1996.

"Kokkola is a magnificent boat - in 2020, she turned 50 - and I must admit that today, perfectly maintained, she has always given us great satisfaction. The great joy is that we are still the same regular crew. I share the boat with my family and friends who, over the years, have always found the time and passion to return onboard to sail with us."

Vittorio and his crew are looking forward to returning to Sardinia later this year to reunite with friends in the Sparkman & Stephens Class.

She features a carbon hull, deck and mast blended with a lightweight interior and a race friendly deck layout, VALKYRIE, is at home in the marina at Porto Cervo or on a RORC Transatlantic Race. Thanks to a lifting keel system, the yacht affords superb sailing qualities as the deep ballast keel allows a lighter weight bulb with high stability. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Better than the best

For Luigi Stoppani, the first full season of cruises and regattas was a great success in terms of goals achieved and fun, including his passion for whales.

When and why did you choose Nautor’s Swan?

Buying a boat, especially the first one, is a dream come true. I didn’t want to get it wrong by making presumptuous mistakes. So I searched for a boat that was both beautiful and high-performing. Something that would satisfy my aesthetic taste and love of sailing while at the same time, allow me to be free of crew constraints.

I found this and much more in the Swan 48. Since I was able to see some of the work close up, I can attest to the fact that they are boats where competence, technology, construction and performance are completely embodied
