June 2013 Newsletter
Thanks to everyone who came out to our last meeting and those of you who have contacted us via the Facebook page and e-mail. We love to hear from you. As always check out our blog at www.saskatoonmqg.com for updates and meeting recaps.
Our Flickr group can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/saskatoonmqg/. If you are a Flickr member please join the group and add your projects to the pool! We'd love to see what you are working on. These don't have to be guild specific projects, just anything you are working on. We love to see the talent in our group. Flickr recently changed their membership and are now offering 1TB of free storage. It's a great place to store and share your photos, the quilting community is quite active on Flickr and we would love to help you navigate and find interesting things if you need assistance.
Regular Sunday meetings will continue to be the 4th Sunday of the month. Our next Sunday meeting is Sunday June 23 at 2pm at Periwinkle
. We also have meetings the second Wednesday of the month, from 7pm-9pm at the Co-op Grocery store on 8th Street. There is a meeting room beside the pharmacy. The next Wednesday night meeting will be June 12
. We endeavor to keep the Sunday meetings more structured and the Wednesday meetings more informal, anything goes on Wednesday, bring something to share with the group, something to work on, things you need help with, whatever you feel like contributing.
Wednesday June 12th meeting: Kelly is having a fashion show at The Whiteroom at 8pm and some of us would love to go show our support, if you are interested come to the meeting at 7pm and a group of people can go to her show together,
Sunday June 23rd Meeting: Carly is back with a lesson on quilt-as-you-go.
New Challenge: "Inspired By"
We wanted to take things a little slower in the summer so we designed a challenge that will last a little longer than normal. Make a quilt (yes, we are, afterall, a quilt guild), inspired by a movie, book, piece of art, song, or anything else that moves you. We want this to be meaningful to you and we would love to hear your story when you present it on September 29th
Make it Modern Challenge
In April we announced a new challenge (due June 23
) - Take a traditional block design and make it modern. Modern is anything you want; fabric choice, design liberties, anything! Make any project you want even if it is just a block.
Patti donated a wonderful bundle of Snap Pop fabric and together we made 36 blocks! Now we need help putting them together. If you would like to help assemble blocks into quilts please send us an email at email@example.com and we will provide you with 12 blocks (or more, or less) for you to assemble as you wish. Want to quilt it? Great! Want to bind it? Also wonderful! Let us know how you want to participate and Jaclyn will assemble a plan to get these finished. Keep receipts used to purchase material for sashing, backing or binding and we will reimburse you. We are still finalizing where the donation will go but will let you know as soon as we have the details.
The "Inspired By" challenge piece would make a great entry to the Saskatoon Quilters' Guild show in October, but please consider entering any and all of your pieces. We would love to see some modern quilts at the show. Intent is due June 10th - details can be found here http://www.saskatoonquiltersguild.com/file.axd?file=2013%2f3%2f2013_intent_to_enter_form_and_rules.pdf
UK Guild Swap
We have been approached by a UK guild to set up a little swap. We circulated a sign-up a few meetings ago, If you are interested please let us know and we will add you to the list. We are currently aiming to swap in September or October. The proposed project is pouches.
Want to become a member? Fees have been set at $20 for the calendar year to cover incidental costs. We are prorating fees quarterly so now memberships are only $10 for the rest of the year. If you would like to attend meetings and find value in what we are doing we encourage you to become a member. Membership forms and cards will be available at all of our meetings. If possible bring cash (to keep costs down we will be operating with cash only). Please feel free to bring a friend or attend a meeting or two before becoming a member.
Thank you so much for the support and enthusiasm! Our door is always open - get in touch with ideas, comments, questions, concerns, and topic suggestions for upcoming meetings!
