TAKE A STAND

Dear UnLocal supporter,

Here is this week's immigration roundup:

  • President Trump announced the creation of a new government agency within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) called “VOICE” in an effort to highlight crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. However, immigrants of all immigration status are actually associated with lower levels of crime than native-born US citizens;
  • There is word that a revised travel ban targeting nationals of the same seven countries is expected to be announced soon. It is set to exclude legal permanent residents and current visa holders from the ban. Much is still unknown about how the revised order will impact refugees;
  • During Trump’s speech to Congress on Tuesday, he said: "We are removing gang members, drug dealers, and criminals that threaten our communities and prey on our innocent citizens." However, this claim is undermined by the government’s own data. Statistics from the DHS and ICE show that the largest single category of people arrested did not have criminal records in the most recent raids.
Highlight's from last week's memos, signed by DHS Secretary John Kelly:
  • The memos call for 10,000 more officers and agents at ICE and 5,000 more at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Both actions will require funding from Congress;
  • The memo prioritizes detaining and deporting persons who are convicted of or charged with any criminal offense;
  • CBP "Shall immediately begin planning, design, construction and maintenance of a wall ... along the land border with Mexico";

  • The memos explicitly state that former President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program will remain in place, at least for now. However, as we have seen some DACA recipients are still being detained.
Trump's actions prove that he is the most anti-immigrant president in modern history. As promised, we will continue to keep you updated.
