Dear Reader,                                                                                                              07 December 2016

Welcome to Issue 179 of the sportanddev newsletter!

This week we feature submissions for our call for articles on volunteers in sport and development programmes. IMBEWU answers the question “what do sports and volunteerism have in common?” by drawing parallels between the values and lessons learned from both. Lind Gustafsdottir, adviser at the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports, discusses his experiences with volunteer programmes, focusing on how to ensure that both the organisation and the volunteer benefits. Lastly, Catherine Houston makes the case that while volunteers and unpaid interns relieve financial burdens, organisations should be considering the negative aspects of not paying young people for their work.

Thank you to everyone who responded to the call for articles. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the space to feature all of them in this newsletter but you can read them all here.

This newsletter also features an eye-opening article on sport and environmental sustainability, and a recap of the Peace and Sport award winners. Also, don’t miss the moving video Shame to Fame in honour of the International Day of People with Disabilities. The video follows the story of Kope Taberanibou who, after being injured in a hurricane, turned to table tennis as a way to rebuild his life.
