The Keystone Pipe Dream/Nightmare
Political Football At Its Best!
The Keystone Pipeline has been one of the most riveting games of political football we've seen in a while. Obama, with his veto of the legislation that would force the construction of the Keystone Pipeline, has sent this game into over time. And his decision possibly heated the game up even more.
The Canadian energy and infrastructure company, TransCanada, filed an application with the U.S. Department of State to build the Keystone XL pipeline, an expansion of the existing Keystone Pipeline, on September 19, 2008. But because the pipeline crosses a national border, it requires federal approval in the form of a Presidential Permit -- which was not granted.
Some charge Obama with interference, and delaying the "game" intentionally, downing the ball and buying some more time. Whether that's what he is doing or not, he does represent a huge hurdle, an obstacle to supporters of the pipeline, one last defense against Keystone Pipeline, lending hope to environmentalists and left-wingers everywhere.

Oregon Senate Extends Low Carbon Fuel Standard -- AAA Wants to Keep Fuel Cheap, BWC Wants to Keep Fuel Clean...
AAA Finally Admits to Opposing the Legislation
The Oregon Clean Fuels Act was extended beyond its current December 31, 2015 sunset by the Oregon State Senate on February 18th, but not before AAA testified against it:
“A Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) in Oregon will increase fuel costs while also creating a complex new set of regulations to facilitate the purchase of credits in an experimental energy market. This amounts to a hidden gas tax for Oregonians, but a gas tax that will not in any way go to help fund Oregon road or bridge improvements. ‘Blended fuels have an adverse impact on the performance of some though not all vehicles,’ said Craig Campbell of AAA Oregon. ‘The LCFS will increase the cost on the motoring public without a commensurate benefit to the motoring public by way of improvements to the transportation system."
This testimony followed AAA's claim that they were not against the extension but were merely stating (uh...giving the opponents) facts.
BWC has expressed support for the LCFS, as the program aims to:
- Establish clean fuel standards to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Oregon’s transportation fuels by 10 percent over a 10-year period, implementing House Bill 2186, which the Oregon Legislature passed in 2009.
- Require importers of transportation fuels – owners of the fuel when it crosses into Oregon – to reduce the average carbon intensity of fuels they provide in Oregon to meet the annual clean fuel standards. To meet the standards, regulated parties can choose a variety of strategies, including incorporating more lower-carbon biofuels, natural gas, biogas, propane or electricity into their fuel mix, or purchase clean fuel credits from providers of clean fuels.
- Allow providers of clean fuels to generate and sell clean fuel credits for the fuels they provide in Oregon.
- Establish fuel supply and fuel price deferrals to contain the program’s cost.
The bill now moves to the Oregon House of Delegates for consideration.

BWC To Give Away Free Memberships To College Students
BWC: A Necessary Part Of A College Education!
Better World is currently seeking colleges to give free memberships to! Yes, you read that correctly. We would like to give a number of memberships away for FREE. And what's better than free?
College is expensive enough, and, unless it's given to them as a present, most college students don't buy themselves emergency roadside assistance. Our gift will hopefully help a few students out of a jam, keep them safe when it happens, and alert them to the coolness of emergency roadside assistance -- especially cool because it's BWC!
Keeping in-line with our "green" theme, we've targeted campuses around the US to be recipients of these memberships that have demonstrated a high level of sustainability and environmental awareness.
Currently, the colleges we are courting are: Portland State, University of Oregon, Marylhurst, University of Washignton, Pinchot, Michigan University, UCLA, Lewis and Clark, Loyola University Chicago, Dickinson College, American University, Green Mountain College of Connecticut, University of Connecticut, Georgia Institute of Technology, Duke, Harvard, Berkeley, Middlebury College, Oberlin College, Evergreen.
Do you attend a college or University that you think would fit the BWC agenda? Let us know! Send us an email.
