Dear Hazelwood Friends,

Those of you who are regular participants in our congregation were sent an email on Sunday that contained the Subject Line: A Letter from the Hazelwood Moderator with news about the congregational vote happening on August 28 to call your next settled minister. This is an exciting time that includes more change and transition, our theme for the last year.

I will be trying to tie up as many loose ends as I can before I leave for previously a planned time off of Spiritual Enrichment with Disciples colleagues from across the country, followed by a few days of vacation. One of the things that is in the works is creating a Disciples Hangout space downstairs where the children and youth (and young adults!) of the congregation can have their own designated space in the building to meet together for faith formation and fellowship, and just plain fun.

Our wonderful building volunteers, Bill Ritchie and Jay Matchett, have been working on clearing out the room, and this past Sunday, additional volunteers of Marianna Gill, Andy and Jairen Rees, and John Starnes (and there may have been others I did not see!) helped move the furniture from the library area to the new Hangout room. It is definitely a work in progress and may not be finished before I leave, but I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with the Trustees, office staff, and volunteers to get the ball rolling on creating a warm and welcoming space for the Children, Youth, and Young Adults of Hazelwood Church, and those yet to come.

You may be wondering about removing the old library furniture. And you may have noticed the one new blue chair that had joined that space recently. Our fantastic Office Administrator, Stefanie, did a search for possible chairs for the area that will update the space AND be easier for older adults to get in and out of… If you’ve ever sat in the old maroon furniture, you know they are comfortable while you are sitting, but incredibly difficult to get out of since they sit so low.

We have had a number of different folks try out the blue “trial chair” that we have had for a few weeks now, and the vast majority agree that it is a huge improvement! Additional chairs and updated tables have been ordered, and it is going to truly be a transformed space when it is finished. Stefanie is also on the hunt for some throw pillows we can add to some of the chairs for those who have short legs. Pictures will be shared in a future newsletter after everything has arrived, and the assembly and set up is complete.

And while I’m talking about building updates, Bill and Jay have also been hard at work getting bids for renovations on the two main restrooms near the rotunda entrance and elevator. Yay! Several of you have noted the need for this, and I know you all will be glad to see this completed later this fall. These two awesome property volunteers also got bids for recent sidewalk upgrades to the sidewalk on the Preschool/ELC side of the building, for which the Hazelwood Preschool is able to pay half the cost, using funds from the government’s Stabilization Grant for childcare programs, which we had previously received.

I’m excited for Hazelwood and all the good things on the horizon. You are a special congregation who I will always hold dear in my heart!
