With the peace and grace of Christ, hello!

This past week I found my way down to the lower level room where all things related to the history of Hazelwood Christian Church are stored. There I found a small tract titled “A Brief Treatise on the Jackson Street Christian Church: Giving an Outline of its Beginnings, Growth and Development - June 27, 1868 to June 27, 1933” by Horace G. Murphy.

I delighted in reading that church 100 and more years ago was not much different than church today. Evident concern is shown for how the church and its people engage with the Muncie community and the larger world. One line from the words about the church’s current preacher in 1933, Dr. Edgar Fay Daugherty, struck me. The line reads, “Brother Daugherty is a preacher of the modern type.” Hmm. I find myself wondering if, 90 years later, I am a preacher of a more modern type? Am I post-modern or, using the latest sociological language, am I post post-modern? There are other terms for today’s age as well: digi-modern, pseudo-modern, meta-modern, trans-postmodern?

Whatever the label (more on labels in this coming Sunday’s sermon!), I find myself standing on the shoulders of all those who have gone before me and also standing on the promises of God.

In Christ,
Rev. Eric

September 25: Church-Wide Field Trip!

Join our new Youth Ministry Assistant, the Epiphany Action Team, and other Hazelwood Friends on an outing to the Levi & Catharine Coffin State Museum in Fountain City on Sunday, September 25! This historic site has been named one of the TOP 25 HISTORIC SITES in the US! It serves as both an important piece of our nation's history and a valuable tool for Christians today to reflect on Christ's call to action on behalf of others.

Joanna Hahn will serve as one of our guides, and we are planning to provide group transportation from the church. We will also offer the chance to be part of a group order from Jimmy John's to be delivered to the church for a quick lunch after worship before we head out no later than 11:30am. We expect to return to the church no later than 3:30pm, possibly sooner. Plan now to join in the fun and fellowship of this learning opportunity.

Click HERE by Sunday, September 18, to sign up to take part in this exciting opportunity!
