Happy Campers at Special Needs Weekend

Wow, what a weekend!! Our special needs event, Holifield Camping Weekend, was a tremendous success with lots of smiles and happy campers!

We kicked off on Friday, with an amazing performance from Shallal Dance Theatre Company. The rain didn’t put many off, and the marquee was soon filled with the happy sounds and faces of Emmantee Choir & Signing group, Hula hooping workshops, and a very exciting barn dance with Jonah’s Lift and their Piratical caller! For those who preferred something quieter there was art with Lisa, making soap dishes from willow with Tasja, face painting, Blank Canvas mural painting and first aid workshops. There were also stalls to browse from Drym Valley Centre selling their pottery and art, Choices selling cakes, to Healthwatch Cornwall, Cornwall People First & Mencap Cornwall providing information for people with additional needs. The disco was enjoyed by all, and the curry provided by Big Jo & Suzi in the café went down a treat! A huge campfire was lit at dusk and we enjoyed sitting around it chatting to old friends and making new ones.

Saturday was filled with brilliant sunshine and so much activity beginning with an egg & bacon butty from the café, and a lovely morning stretch in the form of Wake Up Yoga, followed by a fab Music Workshop, and a belly dance performance & workshop with Seef Saffah. The highlight of the day for many was a fantastic performance from APEX & the Creative Brain, Kyle Coleman and the Travelling Time-Wasters – what amazing musicians! The APEX project gives participants, all with Autism and/or Learning Disabilities, the chance to promote their songs to a wider audience, learning technical and amplification skills alongside digital media/publicity tuition. There was loads more fun and games including dancing with Fit to Wiggle – a charity that aims to get bums off seats, amazing Capoeira performance and workshop with Josh & his team from CDO Cornwall, more Hula Hooping, a sing along act with the talented Andrew Bache & a surprise couple of songs from Kitty Johnston. There were more art workshops, the mural painting to which many contributed became a beautiful snowy scene of a polar bear, more weaving with willow, dressing up, face painting, and ice cream as well as wonderful food from the café! The day was wrapped up with a karaoke session and disco and a brilliant fire show with Cate Manby and more lovely times around the campfire.

What a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends, and for parents and carers to connect and network. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all and we received many wonderful comments about how positive and happy this wonderful mini festival felt, and how people felt like they could be entirely relax and be themselves amongst friends. To be honest, the smiling faces said it all. We feel privileged to be a part of this wonderful thing and are already looking forward to next year!

We need to say a huge thank you to Cornwall Community Foundation and the Cornwall Glass Fund, for the generous grant we received towards the workshops enjoyed by many. A big thanks too to Holifield Farm Project for making this event possible. Without the land, the marquee and the generous contribution towards this event, Holifield Camping Events would not be possible. We would also like to thank the Holifield Farm community for their time, energy and dedication to this wonderful event, Mark Falmouth for the fantastic photographs and a special thank you too to all who contributed, and all who came to watch, play, camp and join in. Without you this weekend wouldn’t happen.  Thank you.

We hope to see you soon at Holifair Family Festival, which raises funds towards the Holifield Farm Project day centre for adults with special needs.

With best wishes from all at Holifield Camping Events & Holifield Farm Project
