The Flu and Flu Shot

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the flu season is ramping up to be one of the worst flu seasons to date, and, "the best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year."  In fact, they are recommending that the following groups all get vaccinated this year:

  • All children 6 months to 18 years old (previous recommendation was 6 months to 5 years old)
  • Anyone over age 50
  • Pregnant Women
  • Anyone with chronic medical conditions

The CDC has a goal to vaccinate an astonishing 261 million people this year!

Why the push?  The CDC claims that 36,000 people die each year from the flu, and that getting the vaccine will prevent you from getting the flu, therefore saving your life (1).

How much of this is true?  Do you need the vaccine?  Is it safe or effective?

Let's take a look at the numbers first - do 36,000 people die from the flu each year?

According to the Centers for Disease Controls own Vital Statistics (the exact same website that claims that 36,000 people die from the flu each year), 1100 people died from the flu in 2004, 1812 in 2005 and 860 people died in 2006 from the flu.  This has actually spiked dramatically - deaths in 2001 were only 257.  Of those deaths attributed to the flu, very few are actually determined for sure that they are tied to influenza (2).

So why does the CDC claim that 36,000 people die from the flu each year?  Apparently researchers with the British Medical Journal wondered the same thing when they asked, "Are US flu death figures more PR than science?"  They concluded that the numbers are inflated to scare the public and sell more of the vaccine (3).

Consequently - they come up with the 36,000 based on two things - 1) a flu epidemic in Hong Kong that killed about 34,000 people, and 2) by combining flu deaths with pneumonia deaths (which is completely different from the flu and even if the flu vaccine did provide immunity against the flu it would not provide immunity against pneumonia).

Despite the outright lies about the numbers, if the flu shot is effective then you want to get the shot, right?  Let's take a look at that question: Is the flu shot safe or effective?

If it were effective then certainly health care workers (HCWs), who are exposed to the flu and other diseases every day, would line up to get their vaccine.  According to the Journal of Internal Medicine, that isn't the case.  The overall vaccination rate among HCWs is just 38%.  The study concluded that "The overall influenza vaccination rate among HCWs in the United States is low.  Interventions seeking to improve HCW vaccination rates may need to target these specific subgroups" (4).

Regarding the effectiveness of the shot, it is important to know how the manufacturers determine what strains of flu to put in that year.  They travel to Asia early in the year and collect data, then guess as to which three flu strains will work their way across the ocean for the beginning of the flu season.

According to the Think Twice Institute:

"Flu 'experts' often guess wrong. For example, in 1994 they predicted that Shangdong, Texas, and Panama strains would be prevalent that year, thus millions of people were vaccinated with a flu shot that contained these viruses. However, when winter arrived, the Johannesburg and Beijing strains of influenza circulated through society. The vaccine was ineffective. This happened again in 1996, and again in 1997. More recently, the vaccine created for the 2003-2004 flu season contained flu strains that did not circulate through society that year. Officials were once again forced to admit that millions of people were vaccinated with an ineffective vaccine (5)."

But what if they guess right for the year and the flu vaccine does contain the correct strains?  We'll answer that with a question: Do you know what is in your flu vaccine?  You may not want one even if they do guess right, simply because of the ingredients.

Here are some of the ingredients:
  • Chick embryos
  • Three flu viruses that were collected in Asia in January or February
  • Formaldehyde (that's right - the stuff they embalm humans with and classified as a known cancer-causing substance by the International Agency for Research on Cancer) (6)
  • Thimerosal - a mercury based preservative which can lead to brain injury, autoimmune diseases and autism
  • Sodium Phosphate or Sodium Chloride
  • Gelatin

Do you want to inject ANY of the above ingredients into your bloodstream???  Even if they guess right, you can count our staff out!  We don't want any of the above things injected in us!

Echinacea for the cold and flu season

by David Christopher, MH, AHG
Echinacea (eke-nay-shuh) is an herb that can be used by practically everyone.  The quick action effectiveness of this member of the daisy family simply amazes all from the novice to the licensed professional.  Simply stated - Echinacea stimulates the immune system.  Because of this stimulating effect Echinacea is touted for a myriad of uses.
Principle among these uses is its wonderful effect on colds and flu.  One of the active compounds of this plant (which is only indigenous to the United States and bordering Canada), are polysaccharides (large sugar molecules).  These water soluble compounds need to be taken orally for full effect, because they may be broken down in the digestive process.  An extract, tea or chewing the root will stimulate immune receptor cells located in the mouth.  In that the cell structure of these compounds is structurally similar to invading micro-organisms and poisonous compounds, exposure to these immune receptor cells sends an alarm to the immune system and the immune cells respond through increased mobility and increased numbers.  There are other immune stimulating compounds found in Echinacea that are fat soluble and would bypass the first stages of digestion thus stimulating immune cells located in the intestinal tract.  However, these fat soluble compounds would allow encapsulated Echinacea to also be effective.
Because colds and flus are caused by viruses, antibiotics not only will not work but become very contra indicated because they compromise the immune system - which is the only thing that can protect the body.
For best results start taking Echinacea at the first signs of illness.  However, if you wait too long, not even Echinacea can help your immune system catch up.  At this point you will need the added remedy of garlic - 16 fresh crushed cloves per day.

When others around you are sick start taking a protective dose, which is 1 dropperful 2-3 times a day for 10 days, then go 4 days off for up to 3 cycles.  If you start experiencing symptoms take 1-2 dropperfuls every 2 hours for up to 10 days then go back to the protective dose.

Keep taking Echinacea for 48 hours after the symptoms of the cold or flu disappear.

Note: Children should use a glycerine extract like Kid-e-mune (which my two little grandsons just love to take).
What's so special about Apple Cider Vinegar?

Dr. Christopher recommended you take three tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar every day because of its amazing healing properties.  Here are some of its health benefits:
  • dissolves mucus
  • has antiseptic qualities
  • aids in proper coagulation of blood
  • builds healthy blood vessels
  • aids in digestion
  • is rich in enzymes and potassium
  • supports a healthy immune system
  • helps control weight
  • promotes digestion and ph balance
  • helps soothe dry throats
  • helps remove body sludge and toxins
  • helps maintain healthy skin
  • helps promote youthful, healthy bodies
  • soothes irritated skin
  • relieves muscle pain from exercise
  • gives you increased energy

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) can also help with a number of other ailments - here is a sample:

Headaches: Add two tablespoons ACV and 1 teaspoon honey to a glass of distilled water and drink it.

Nosebleeds: Put some ACV on a cotton ball and put it in your nose.

Sunburn: Apply ACV directly to skin or put 1-2 cups of ACV in a tub full of water.

Corns, Calluses and Warts: Put ACV on a cotton ball or gauze - bandage it down.

Laryngitis: Add 1/3 cup ACV to a glassful of water - gargle it, swish it and spit it out.  This draws toxins right out of your throat.

Skin Blemishes and Acne: Boil some water in a pot - add a few tablespoons of ACV, then place a towel over your head and the pot and breathe the steam in for a few minutes.  Next, put some ACV on cotton ball and rub it over your face.  Do this twice.  Finally, pat cold ACV diluted with an equal amount of ACV on your face.  Repeat 1-2 times per week as needed.  Do for 90 days and you will have completely new, clear skin.

Dandruff: Massage into scalp an hour prior to shampooing

For most of the above ailments apple cider vinegar is simply an aid to help when you have had unhealthy eating habits, but it is not a cure-all if you are unwilling to change your diet.  If you continue to eat pizza and soda pop you are still going to have skin blemishes and acne.  If you are ready to change your habits then apple cider vinegar can help take care of these problems.

We recommend you use Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar - it is the best raw, organic vinegar.  Never use dead, distilled vinegar because the natural enzymes, minerals, and nutrients are destroyed in the distilling process. Any vinegar that is clear and has no "mother" (the strand-like substance in the bottom of the bottle) has no nutritional value. White distilled or white wine vinegar contains harmful acetic acid.  Natural raw vinegar should be pungent, with a rich, brownish color and a visible "mother."

How Dr. Christopher recommended you take Apple Cider Vinegar

Place one tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in warm water, so that the honey will liquefy. Sip this amount three times a day so that at the end of the day a total of three tablespoons of each is consumed. It can be taken immediately after the cayenne (mentioned last week).

The Majesty of Cayenne

Cayenne is a medicinal and nutritional herb.  It is the purest and most certain stimulant.

Cayenne works best in combination with a good diet and may give only symptomatic relief unless the lifestyle and diet are corrected.  The recommended diet is one high in fresh raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, and sprouted seeds and grains.  Sugar, soda drinks, flour products, fried foods, and dairy are all mucus forming and should be avoided.  Sun, clean air, deep breathing, clean water, exercise and positive thinking are also part of the program.  For more information on this topic, see Dr. Christopher's two little pamphlets entitled "The Three Day Cleansing Program, Mucusless Diet, and Herbal Combinations" and " Curing the Incurables ."

Taking cayenne daily helps improve your circulation and digestion and it is a powerful food for the heart.

One of the most important uses of cayenne is as a circulatory stimulant.  It feeds the necessary elements into the cell structure of the arteries, veins, and capillaries so that they regain youthful elasticity and so that the blood pressure reduces itself to normal.  When the venous structure becomes loaded with sticky mucus, the blood cannot circulate freely, so higher pressure is needed to force the blood through.  Cayenne equalizes the blood pressure, influencing the heart immediately, and then extending its effects to the venous structure.  It also works to cut the mucus in the venous system, and indeed in all the systems throughout the body.

The most common medical use of Cayenne is as a gastric stimulant and digestive aid.  It rebuilds the stomach tissue and stimulates peristalsis, thus assisting in assimilation and elimination.

Cayenne improves digestion.  Studies have revealed that cayenne stimulates the production of hydrochloric acid, which enables the breakdown of proteins in the stomach.  It works best when it is tasted; it only takes a pinch on the tongue before eating!  Any way you eat it, before or during the meal, cayenne will improve digestion.

Used as a heart attack preventative, along with the Mucusless Diet and a healthful life-style, Cayenne can do wonders in toning and rebuilding the heart and keeping it in top condition.  Cayenne is one of the richest and most stable sources of Vitamin E, which is known to be a heart builder.

This is one of the fastest acting aids we could ever give for the heart because it feeds that heart immediately.  Most hearts are suffering from malnutrition because of processed food we are eating, but here it gets a good powerful dose of real food.

The warm tea is faster working than tablets, capsules, cold tea, because the warm tea opens up the cell structure--makes it expand and accept the cayenne that much faster, and it goes directly to the heart, through the artery system, and feeds it with powerful food.

Start by taking ¼ teaspoon of this herb three times a day. Gradually work up to 1 teaspoon three times a day.  Stir the cayenne in 4-6 ounces of distilled water. Drink this, and then chase it with more distilled water.   To assure that you get good quality cayenne, we recommend that you buy it at a health food store.

Cayenne can be cultivated just like Green Peppers.  Seeds can be purchased at garden stores or through seed catalogs.  You can start them under glass or in the house in mid-February if you plan to set them in late May.  Feed the developing seedlings manure tea and turn them so each side gets equal sun.

When you are ready to set the plants, protect them from cutworms with a tin-can or brown-paper collar and set them three feet apart, as they grow bigger than bell peppers.  Harden the plants gradually--partially shading them--for about a week, and mulch them to preserve moisture.  Do not over-fertilize them, or you'll get much leaf and little fruit.

Red Raspberry - Can help fight during cold and flu season.

Dr. Christopher always extolled the virtues of red raspberry leaf tea.  Red raspberry leaves are a great aid in times of cold or flu and provide the body aid in times of cold and flu and provide the body with iron in an absorbable form.  It is high in calcium, making it an important tea for the pregnant or nursing woman.  Throughout the history of American Botanic Medicine, red raspberry leaves are mentioned as a tonic for the female reproductive system.  Its astringent properties help strengthen the uterus.  Dr. Coffin, of the early American Botanic Medicine School mentions red raspberry leaves extensively for every phase of pregnancy.  Jethro Kloss states in Back to Eden that red raspberry leaves will allay menstrual cramps and promote a painless labor.  Dr. Christopher has always advised nursing mothers to drink marshmallow root tea to increase milk flow and red raspberry tea to enrich the milk.  In the booklet The Cold Sheet Treatment and Aids for the Common Cold, Dr. Christopher explains how to conquer the cold by fasting on red raspberry leaf tea.  The leaves contain fragrine, a substance that affects the muscles of the pelvic region.

The astringent and nutritive properties of red raspberry are employed in Dr. Christopher's lower bowel formula, the female corrective formula, and the herbal eyebright combination.  The great medical botanist, Dr. Samuel Thomson, used red raspberry in his patented system of medicine.  Lobelia was first given as an emetic, then cayenne was administered to restore heat to the body and red raspberry was taken as a tea to remove canker from the digestive tract.  Red raspberry leaf tea may be used as a gargle for sore mouths and throat canker, according to the English Herbalist, Maude Grieve.  Externally the tea can be used as a wash on ulcers and other wounds.  The herb also aids in setting the stomach.

Red raspberry can be easily cultivated.  It should be planted in the spring from suckers taken from plants that are a year old.  The suckers can be set three feet apart with six to eight feet between rows.  The soil needs to be moist and the plants should be exposed to full sun.

Red raspberry leaf tea should be kept on hand for women and women-to-be.  A mother should give a young girl a cup of red raspberry tea every day as she approaches puberty. This will make the transitional period much smoother.

Red raspberry leaf tea is made by using a heaping teaspoons of red raspberry leaves to each cup of hot steam-distilled water, or one ounce of the herbs (two heaping tablespoons, approximately) to each pint of distilled water.  Never let the tea boil, but pour the boiling water over the herbs and then steep fifteen or twenty minutes in a warm place, strain and drink.  It is best to drink three or more cups a day of this tea during the entire pregnancy.  It is a pleasant-tasting tea and is also an anti-nausea.
