With Spring Comes ... Lyme Disease

With the advent of Spring we become increasingly aware of little creatures filling the woods and fields and finding their way into our cloths and animal companions.

Along with this comes the danger of Lyme disease. Here at Tree Of Life Holistic Wellness Center, we are one of the few Lyme Literate clinics in Northern California. We have a very successful protocol and history with this issue. To better aid you, the reader, we have included an article from David Christopher detailing some of the specifics of this illness.

Message from the Director: David Christopher M.H.

Lyme disease is, in essence, another modern day plague, as was the case with Candida albicans recognized in the early 90’s, but still a large problem.  If you recall Medical Doctors were in denial about yeast overgrowth and misdiagnosed or prescribed anti-depressants saying the particulars of the patients complaints were only in their head.  Today, they are treating Lyme disease in a similar fashion.

One large problem is that, the standard tests approved by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) Elisa or Western Blot test, generally report false negative results - meaning (in many proven cases) that if you have Lyme disease the tests do not detect that you have it.  It is disappointing that at this time, the standard procedure of diagnosis for this life-altering bacteria is unreliable and even faulty; without proper testing a diagnosis cannot be made.  Even still, over 35,000 new cases were reported to the Center for Disease Control in 2008.  The CDC estimates the actual number of cases have risen to be 6-12 times higher today then before.

Lyme disease is a tick delivered bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi.  Early signs include fever, headache, fatigue, and rash many times presenting as a uniquely characteristic “orange bulls eye rash”.  If untreated, it can cause serious complications involving the joints, heart, eyes, and nervous system.  Most doctors treat it with 28 days of antibiotics (Doxycycline); other doctors treat it with antibiotics for months or even years.  Extended treatment with the antibiotics can cause systemic yeast overgrowth, and adding to the concoction of complications, the bacteria can become dormant only to reappear later after treatment.

To even further complicate matters, other invaders activate while the immune system is struggling to deal with Lyme disease.  These include yeast molds, viruses, protozoan, parasites and other bacteria already in the system including but not limited to Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, and Mycoplasma. In general, most people already have a compromised immune system and during the stress of the disease and additional invaders, the body becomes overwhelmed and it cannot fight back.  Each invader requires different drugs and the administration of multiple medications can result in a Jarisch- Herxheimer reaction (basically toxic overload from invader kill off).  It appears that the more Lyme disease is treated medically the weaker the immune system becomes. Simply people do not get over Lyme disease with conventional treatment.

Our suggestion would be:
  1. First get rid of yeast overgrowth and plug up the holes in the intestinal tract. For instructions to eradicate systemic yeast overgrowth refer to the back-issue of this newsletter dated May 5, 2010.
  2. After resolving yeast overgrowth, address the bacterial problem by consuming 16 cloves of fresh Garlic per day (see Herbal Legacy Recipes containing garlic, especially the onion soup) and take one tablespoon every waking hour of Dr. Christopher’s Super Garlic Immune Syrup (formerly named Anti-Plague Formula).  Getting sick from bacterial kill off can be avoided by doing the Extended Herbal Cleanse as explained in Dr. Christopher’s Three Day Cleansing Program and Mucusless Diet book.
  3. The protozoan would require the additional use of the herbal extract Artemisia annua (Sweet Annie), 10 drops of the extract 5 times per day.  Dr. Christopher’s Parasite Formula is a must along with eating Papaya seeds, pomegranate, blackberries, cinnamon, and cloves.
  4. Brain disorders, like foggy brain, often occur with Lyme disease.  The Dr. Christopher Mind Trac formula is the first remedy of choice.
  5. The weakened immune system should be helped with Dr. Christopher’s Immune System Formula Capsules, at the rate of five capsules five times per day.

Other effected systems of the body can be addressed with the large variety of Dr. Christopher formulas described at The School of Natural Healing’s public reference library Herbal Legacy.

Oh spring and summer the seasons looked so forward to especially towards the end of a long winter.  Many dread the changing of seasons with a host of discomforts that accompany it. A nose that is runny like someone left the faucet on. Eyes itching so badly that you want to scratch your eyes out. Sleep can be disrupted because of a dripping nose trickling across your face or down the throat. Sounds like I’ve experienced it first hand? You’re right on! There is a happy ending to this story more on that later
What is Hay fever?
Contrary to the name it doesn’t mean you are allergic to hay. In the 1800’s doctors named the symptoms hay fever after noticing rural residents experienced itchy eyes, sneezing, and coughing after exposure to cut hay or grass. One of the old English definitions of “fever” is any time a patient appeared nervous. You might be nervous too if suddenly your nose is dripping and you don’t have a handkerchief.  It wasn’t realized at the time the culprit probably was pollen or mold. Hay fever affects about 40 million people in the United States alone making it the most common allergic condition.

When you have hay fever you react to commonly inhaled allergens. Your immune system is confused. It identifies the allergen as an invader and your body starts to produce an antibody to fight called immunoglobulin E or IgE. The next time you are expose to the allergen an attack is order and it’s all out war and you feel miserable. IgE antibodies start the release of an inflammatory chemical – histamine. This causes the mucous membranes to swell in the nose, sinuses and eyes and all those wonderful symptoms proceed to manifest.

You are more likely to have allergies if you have a family history, male (I would debate that!), firstborn, exposed to cigarette smoke in the first year of life, exposed to allergens, dust or pet dander. Left unchecked you may experience secondary infections such as sinus infections and nose bleeds caused by inflammation from blowing constantly. Otitis media, middle ear infections caused from the fluid build up in the middle ear. Respiratory infections may develop.  Hay fever may increase the risk of asthma.
What to do?

The first thing Dr. Christopher taught is to get off dairy! Cleanse and nourish the body, use the principles taught by Dr. Christopher. Go to the cause instead of using herbs just to treat the symptoms. Since the immune system is confused we also need to use those herbs that will strengthen and calm the immune system. Immucalm is a wonderful formula. The astragalus root in the formula strengthens the immune system and helps it to start to recognize what cells it really should be attacking. The marshmallow calms the immune system and it is a great anti-inflammatory. In combination with that formula nettle is great anti-histamine. Dr. Andrew Weil doctor at the University of Arizona, and a botanist, suggests two capsules of nettle every 2 hrs until symptoms are relieved. Other helps can include stay in on windy days. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Daily exercise has shown to be very beneficial. Keep windows and doors shut and use the air conditioning with a good clean filter.

When I became a student at the School of Natural Healing and discovered how bad dairy was my first thought was how could I ever give it up. I drank milk with everything. I also had hay fever, at least two sinus infections a year, and laryngitis. Something in what I was learning rang true so I decided to put it to the test. I gave up all dairy products: milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt, cream cheese, sour cream and butter. It wasn’t as bad as I thought. There are so many transitional products like Rice dream, Better than Sour Cream etc. Gradually my symptoms have gotten better. This year I am happy to report that I have had no symptoms at all. I have had no sinus infections or laryngitis for several years. Of course I have been off of dairy for I think six years now.  I started taking Immucalm and Nettle capsules two weeks before I usually get bad. This winter when everyone around me had colds and coughs I felt great.
My daughter has also experienced similar benefits. Her allergies were so bad that at one time we thought she would have to be hospitalized. She couldn’t even play outside for about 2 months of every spring and early summer. Yesterday she was bouncing on the trampoline with her cousins in the sprinklers having a great time in the peak of allergy season. I’m just grateful my reasoning was stronger than my taste buds.

Eggplant Bacon

First, let’s break down why bacon can be bad for your health and physique. In just 3 ounces of cooked bacon, there are 763 calories, 85 grams of fat, 27 grams of saturated fat, 23 milligrams of sodium, and no fiber. These are off the chart quantities!

This recipe for vegan eggplant bacon is infused with the smoke and spice reminiscent of real bacon without the fat and salt overload. Enjoy!
Eggplant Bacon

Makes 8-10 slices

1 medium eggplant
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
¼ teaspoon cayenne
1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke
1/2 teaspoon maple flavoring
1 tablespoon olive oil

Directions: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut the eggplant, lengthwise, into thin slices. Use a mandolin slicer to make the job easier.

Mix soy sauce, brown sugar, cayenne, liquid smoke, and maple flavoring. Set aside.

On a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, brush an even layer of olive oil. Place eggplant slices on the greased baking sheet. Turn them around so that now both sides are lightly greased from the sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the eggplant begins to brown lightly.

Remove from the oven and brush both sides of the eggplant with the soy sauce and seasonings mixture. Bake for another 4-5 minutes. Be sure that they do not burn and become too hard. They should darken because of the soy sauce mixture and slightly crisp.

Set them aside to cool and bend them as you like so they cool in a shape similar to that of bacon. Enjoy in salads, sandwiches or just by themselves.

Stinging nettle is an astringent, diuretic, tonic, anodyne, pectoral, rubefacient,
styptic, anthelmintic, nutritive, alterative, hemetic, anti-rheumatic,
anti-allergenic, anti-lithic/lithotriptic, haemostatic, stimulant,
decongestant, herpatic, febrifuge, kidney depurative/nephritic, galactagogue,
hypoglycemic, expectorant, anti-spasmodic,
and anti-histamine.
Nettle leaf is among the most valuable herbal remedies. Because of its many
nutrients, stinging nettle is traditionally used as a spring tonic.
It is a slow-acting nutritive herb that gently cleanses the body of
metabolic wastes. It is one of the safest alteratives, especially in the
treatment of chronic disorders that require long-term treatment. It has
a gentle, stimulating effect on the lymphatic system, enhancing the excretion
of wastes through the kidneys.
Nettle's iron content makes it a wonderful blood builder, and the presence
of vitamin C aids in the iron absorption. As a hemetic (an herb
rich in iron), this is an excellent herb for anemia and fatigue, especially
in women. It promotes the process of protein transanimation in
the liver, effectively utilizing digested proteins, while simultaneously
preventing them from being discharged through the body as waste products.?
Stinging nettle is beneficial during pregnancy due to its rich mineral value
and vitamin K, which guards against excessive bleeding. It is also
a good supplement to strengthen the fetus. It is used during labor to
ease the pains, and will increase milk production in lactating women.
Stinging nettle is often recommended for pre-menstrual syndrome because of
its toxin-ridding activity. When the liver is sluggish, it processes estrogen
slowly, contributing to the high levels that cause or aggravate PMS.
It acts as a restorative remedy during menopause, and the astringency
of the herb helps in excessive menstrual flow.
As a diuretic, stinging nettle increases the secretion and flow of urine.
This makes it invaluable in cases of fluid retention and bladder infections.
It is also anti-lithic and nephridic, breaking down stones in
the kidneys and gravel in the bladder.
