National Shared Parenting Survey

We are proud to have launched Ireland's first National Shared Parenting Survey to finally give a voice to thousands of parents and children who are not recognised; for whom relevant and appropriate policies and services are severely lacking. Our experience and evidence show that many lone parents share parenting to some extent with their child’s other parent, even though they live separately and are not in a relationship with each other, but little information is available about this reality for so many. This means that essential supports are few and far between. We want to change this, and to raise awareness about shared parenting.

What is shared parenting? Do you do it, or know anyone who does? Sharing parenting could mean that, after separation, parents share parenting of their child 50:50. Or it could mean that a child lives with one parent during the week and spends times with their other parent at weekends or during holidays. It could be court ordered, or agreed between parents. We need to hear from as many people as possible about their experiences, and how sharing parenting works, or does not work, for them. This is an anonymous survey that should take no more than ten minutes to complete.

Annual Review 2015 & New Strategy

We also launched our Annual Review 2015. Last year, calls to our askonefamily helpline increased by another 20%, mainly owing to governmental reform of the One Parent Family Payment which led to fear, and reduced income for many who were surviving on already tight budgets. Our fifth Family Day Festival saw 5,000 people celebrate family diversity. Our services including counselling, parent supports like mediation, and askonefamily supported over 3,400 people in 2015.

In the short video below, 10 year old Dani talks about our work and the issues facing diverse families in Ireland today, while Karen Kiernan, our CEO, looks to the future with our new Strategy 2016-2018 and our ongoing commitment to cherish all children and all families, and to work towards a society that does not discriminate based on family type.

Social Group Outings

We have a number of exciting low cost days out planned for the summer, including visits to Dublin Zoo, Newbridge House and Ardgillan Castle. These trips are open to anyone parenting alone or sharing parenting. Our social group is great way for you and your child to share a fun day out, and for parents to socialise with other parents in similar circumstances.

Places are limited so book now by email, call us on 01 662 9212, and check out our Facebook page for full event details.
