Autumn is in the air

but there's no sign of hibernation at Cherish House as it's a busy new season at One Family.

September brings change for many families as children start or return to school, and though an exciting time, it can mean that financial and other factors contribute to stress. Remember that our askonefamily helpline is available to all members of one-parent families who would like advice or simply a friendly ear, on lo-call 1890 662 212. You can also email

If you are in receipt of a long term social welfare payment, such as One Parent Family Payment, a reminder that Fuel Allowance is due to re-start from Monday 7 October at the rate of €20 per week, payable with your main social welfare payment. If you have not received it previously, you can pick up an application form at your local social welfare office or post office.

This year Budget Day has been brought forward to Tuesday 15 October. Our message to Government is simple: 10 Solutions. No Cuts. We're asking that you support our campaign for 10 Solutions. All it costs is a few minutes of your time.

Read on to find out more about 10 Solutions and how you can be a part of it, our upcoming courses for lone parents and for professionals, our JobBridge vacancy, and our Toy Appeal.

10 Solutions. No Cuts.

Adults and children in one-parent households in Ireland suffer more than twice the national average rates of deprivation. This is simply not acceptable yet Budget 2012 penalised one-parent families and current systems mean that progression to employment and education can be difficult and complex. We've called on government to deliver 10 Solutions for Smarter Futures in Budget 2014; our ten practical no-cost/low-cost measures designed to facilitate lone parents moving into the workplace, education and/or training. The more people who join the campaign, the stronger our message becomes. Take action now by emailing your TDs, and spread the word on Facebook and Twitter.

A New Future

If you're parenting alone or sharing parenting and interested in getting back into the workplace or education after a gap or for the first time, we offer two courses that may be for you. New Futures is a training with support programme accredited at FETAC Level 4 /5, designed to help you discover what jobs or courses are suited to you. Options offers practical skills for progression into employment, self employment and/or college with career tasters in subjects including IT, Business and Social Care, and experience of a further education environment. They run in the mornings in Dublin 2 with some free childcare places available. To learn more, please click here or call Helen on 01 662 9212.

We also offer a number of parenting courses on an ongoing basis to people who parent alone or share parenting. Positive Parenting and Family Communications are designed to build on your parenting skills and strenghten your family unit, while Shared Parenting will help you to promote a positive parenting relationship with your child's other parent so that children are kept at the centre of parenting. Find out about these courses here. If you're a professional working with one-parent families, our Train the Trainer programmes are intensive and highly participative. Click here for information.

Join our Team

We are offering an Internship through JobBridge for a Training Service & Communications Assistant to work across our Training for Professionals service and Communications. This is an interesting role offering a variety of experience. If you're in receipt of One Parent Family Payment, Jobseekers Allowance, Jobseekers Benefit, Disability Allowance, or signing for social insurance contribution credits for at least 3 months, you may be eligible. The closing date for receipt of applications is Friday 4 October at 5pm. Please find further information on eligibility and the role here.

Toy Appeal

Every December we host a party for the children who use our services and for the children of the adults who use our services, many of whom are from homes where budgets are so tight that buying food rather than gifts at Christmas has to be a priority. The party is great fun with a magician, games, music and treats. Every child receives their own gift. Could you organise a toy drive for One Family at your workplace or college? Or perhaps you'd like to donate a toy, or volunteer to gift wrap them in early December? Please contact Catherine on 01 662 9212 to find out how you can help.
