A month of news from One Family.

The holiday season is almost upon us

and we're all looking forward to relaxing with our families and friends, curling up for some good festive movies, walks in the crisp Winter air, and perhaps a few chocolates too many.

This has been a tough year for many of the families we work with and we have recorded a 30% increase in calls to our askonefamily helpline. Many of the new callers to askonefamily are those parents who are in working poverty, balanced on the verge of homelessness, and/or newly experiencing separation. The real impact of years of austerity is now coming to the fore. Yesterday we issued a press release calling again on Government to recognise this reality for so many thousands of families by implementing our 10 Solutions with an immediate focus on provision of quality, accessible, affordable childcare.

We are delighted to announce that our first online parenting course will run in Spring 2015, in response to consistent demand from parents around the country. Read on for details about this, our expressions of gratitude to all those who have supported our work in 2014, our end of year monthly survey round up, Christmas tips, and much more.
In observance of the Christmas and New Year holidays, One Family and the askonefamily helpline will be closed through to 2 January 2015, re-opening on 5 January.

Wishing you and your family a safe and joyful Christmas and New Year from all at One Family.

Thank You

Our small and dedicated One Family team is supported by people who volunteer their time and expertise. They include solicitors, play therapists and IT experts. At events such as our Family Day Festival, we are helped by a dynamic team of volunteers from facepainters to performers to clean-up crew members. At this time of year, the generous staff of a number of companies support our annual Toy Appeal to make sure that children receive a gift at Christmas and others donate wonderful food hampers and grocery vouchers. Individuals donate baby clothes and accessories throughout the year, and others fundraise by running marathons or sky diving. We are incredibly fortunate to receive your support and thank each and every one of you for the real difference you make for families.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead to 2015, we have grave concerns about the implementation of Government's activation policies which will see over 39,000 people in receipt of the One Parent Family Payment moved to Jobs Seekers Transition. We will continue to work hard for the best outcomes for families. We hope for insightful discussion about the upcoming Children & Family Relationships Bill and the Marriage Equality Referendum, free of scare-mongering and rhetoric. We look forward to working with members of our Policy Panel to craft new policy submissions and invite expressions of interest from people parenting alone or sharing parenting to take part. We look forward also to the launch of our new online parenting course in Spring 2015, and many more One Family initiatives.

Monthly Survey

Throughout 2014, we invited people who parent on their own or share parenting to take our short, anonymous monthly surveys. Topics included Single Person Child Carer Tax Credit, Housing Supports, Engagement with the Local and European Elections, and Lone Parents and Shame. All of this year's survey results are available to read here. Our final 2014 survey, results of which will be online in January, is on topics of importance for 2015. Take it here.

New Online Course

Our first online parenting course will run in Spring 2015. An eight week course, it has been carefully created from modules of our acclaimed Positive Parenting for Changing Families programme. The eight weekly sessions will be communicated via email and include reflective exercises and completion of a learning journal. While self-managed via weekly emails, it will be supported by live Q&A sessions. It is free! Sign up here.

Christmas Tips

We know that Christmas can be an especially difficult time of year for people who parent on their own and for people who share parenting of their children, for many reasons. In our weekly '10 Ways' parenting series, we aim to address some of the concerns parents may have, such as in '10 Ways to Achieve Successful Shared Parenting Over Christmas', 'Make Christmas Stress Free' and 'Explain an Absent Parent.' Additional online resources are available on our website here
If you missed the award-winning Today FM documentary Cherish All The Children about our establishment in 1972 and our ongoing evolution, featuring interviews with our brave founders, our first President Mary Robinson and many more, you can listen here.
