E-Learning

One Family offer five e-learning courses, which are courses you take in your own time, in the comfort of your own home. The courses have video content from One Family staff plus additional learning resources to help you make the most of your learning time.  Parents can monitor their own progress and engage in as many courses as they wish as the one time. These courses have specific content for those parenting alone or sharing parenting but in general the programme supports all family forms.

Consultation on the Next National Policy Framework for Children & Young People

The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth has opened a consultation on its next National Policy Framework for Children and Young People.

The consultation is by online survey, available here. You can also make a submission by post and drawings and pictures are welcome. Submissions from children and young people are welcome, along with parents and caregivers.

Cost of Living

One Family raised the impact of inflation and rising prices on one-parent families. The Government announced measures including a €200 energy rebate for all households, a 20% cut on public transport fares and a €125 increase in the Fuel Allowance. They also brought forward the €10 weekly increase in the Working Family Payment announced in the Budget forward by two months. While these measures are welcome, they do not go far enough to protect one-parent families from a disproportionate impact of the cost of living crisis.

Instead One Family would have liked to see the Government take a more targeted, sustainable approach and prioritised supports to the most vulnerable. For example, the lump sum Fuel Allowance payment will help families struggling to pay one, maybe two months’ bills; but extending the payable Fuel Allowance period to 32 weeks would have restored purchasing power for these families long-term. Recipients of the Working Family Payment saw the least gains in Budget 2022, with the €10 increase announced barely keeping a pace with inflation. The Government could have done more to help these families, such as making them eligible for the Fuel Allowance.

We will continue to highlight the Cost of Living. If you would like to share your story or learn more about our policy work in this area please email policy@onefamily.ie.

Issues facing one-parent families have been prominent in the media with One Family and other NGOs advocating on behalf of families. Please see below a selection of stories from the month:

Remembering the Work of Sherie de Burgh

One Family held the Third Annual Sherie de Burgh Commemorative Seminar on Tuesday, 15 February via Zoom. We were delighted to host this event in partnership with Trinity College Dublin’s renowned School of Social Work and Social Policy.

During the evening, a selection of speakers reflected on Sherie’s leadership in the practice of counselling, the critical role she played in supporting people dealing with unintended and crisis pregnancies and we explored the role of pregnancy counselling practice in Ireland – past, present and future.

You can view the recording of the event below.
