We hope you are all enjoying the fine weather we have been getting lately.

Today we are pleased to share details of our annual Family Day Festival in celebration of family diversity which this year takes place in Wolfe Tone Square, Dublin 1 on Sunday 17 May. We'd love to see you on the day so mark your diary! More details are below.

We also continue to lobby against the current changes to the One-Parent Family Payment (OFP) which, being phased in without proper supports and combined with cuts, are not going to work. Recently we clarified our position on these reforms. We will continue to engage with the Department of Social Protection and have compiled examples which we sent to the Department that we received from people parenting alone of their experiences in local social welfare/INTREO offices are the country. It makes for worrying readingOne Family staff and Policy Panel members took part in a Civic Forum hosted by Independent Senator Katherine Zappone in Leinster House on 14 April, along with other organisations and individuals who share our concerns about the current reform. Attendees aired their concerns and compiled a list of recommendations which the Senator intends submitting to the Tánaiste. Senator Zappone's Seanad statement following the Forum can be viewed here.

Our Policy Panel members also attended their second meeting here in Cherish House on 18 April. The panel members represent the diversity of women and men parenting alone and sharing parenting in Ireland today. Through face to face meetings and an online forum, the panel are contributing their lived reality to inform our policies and our Budget 2016 submission which will be submitted on 18 June. We will update you as this progresses.

Referendum Campaign Response

Last week we issued a press release in response to many 'No' campaigners who have made inaccurate, hurtful and misleading comments about outcomes for children from 'non-traditional' family forms such as one-parent families which, based on our 40+ years of experience working with families and current, reputable research as referenced in our release, we refute.
We would welcome your opinion on if One Family should take a position on the Referendum so are requesting that clients, members and supporters take this short survey.

Mark your diary for Family Day!

Our annual Family Day Festival will be held on Sunday 17 May 2015 from 11am-5pm. This year we are moving the festivities to Wolfe Tone Square, Jervis Street, Dublin. Preparations are well underway and it is shaping up to be another fun-filled celebration of family diversity in Ireland and remains free. Family Day is inspired by United Nation International Day of the Family, held on 15 May annually. With entertainment, workshops and activities to wow children and grown-ups alike and lots of family service organisations on hand to share information, Family Day is not to be missed.

Monthly Survey

Every month we invite people who parent on their own or share parenting to take our short, anonymous survey. Last month we asked you about local childcare services. You can read what you told us here.
This month we are further exploring the childcare issue as it remains one of the greatest barriers for people parenting alone in returning to education or employment. Please tell us what you think childcare/out of school care provision should look like in Ireland. Take the survey here.

Parenting Supports

Trouble communicating with your teenager? Don't understand your or your child's behaviour? Feeling overwhelmed? Our Positive Parenting and Family Communications courses will start up again on 5 May. Find out more here. We also have Parent Mentors based in Dublin, Cork, Tipperary and Galway. Find out more here. You can also join our online Parenting Group on Facebook. This is a new group which offers a live Q&A on a different topic every Monday morning. Details of these and our other parenting supports can be found here.

Call for Volunteers

Would you like to contribute to Ireland's largest celebration of family diversity, gain new skills and make new friends? Why not join our Family Day team? We are seeking volunteers to work with us to help in a variety of areas including: stage/performer assistance; games, arts, crafts and activities; event set up and tidy up; information; and stewarding. It is a great opportunity to volunteer as part of this year’s National Volunteering Week. Contact Leanne to find out more.
If you missed the award-winning Today FM documentary Cherish All The Children about our establishment in 1972 and our ongoing evolution, featuring interviews with our brave founders, our first President Mary Robinson and many more, you can listen here.
