Hello and welcome

to a month of One Family news. This morning we are in the beautiful Chester Beatty Library in Dublin Castle to launch the Evaluation of the Child Contact Centre pilot services and our Key Learnings document with policy recommendations. Links to the Evaluation and Key Learnings are included below.

We're seeking new One Family team members as we offer a JobBridge Internship, two CE positions, and volunteer roles. We're starting on the countdown to the Family Day Festival, our annual celebration of the diversity of families in Ireland which takes place on Sunday, 18 May in the Iveagh Gardens and we need Team One Family Members for the Flora Womens Mini Marathon on Monday, 2 June.  Don't forget to mark your diaries to join us for both!

Lastly, thank you to everyone who took our 3 Question Survey on Income Disregards. You can access the results and take this month's survey on Housing Supports below.

Child Contact Centres

Child Contact Centre services were run on a pilot basis in two Dublin locations between 2011 and 2013 by Barnardos and One Family in a partnership arrangement. The service offered a range of assessment, contact and family support services to high-conflict families who were frequently in legal disputes in relation to contact arrangements for their children. Today we are launching the Evaluation and our Key Learnings document with policy recommendations. Speakers include the Hon Mr Justice Michael White of the High Court and Chair of the Courts Family Law Committee; Dr Stephanie Holt of the School of Social Work and Social Policy, Trinity College Dublin; and our CEO Karen Kiernan. The Evaluation, Executive Summary and Key Learnings can be accessed here.

Training Time

Our Spring/Summer 2014 season of training courses for professionals working with families continues with new courses announced for Dublin, Ballinasloe, Waterford and Mullingar. Our three-day flag ship programme - Family Communications: Coping with Family Life and Communication with Teenagers - is an accredited programme meaning that professionals can qualify to facilitate it on completion, in one-to-one or group session, utilising our 40+ years of experience. This course is for you if you deliver parenting/family support courses, you work with parents and their children or you are a family support worker, social worker, youth worker, family therapist, educator, drugs project worker or counsellor. Find out more.

Join our Team

We are currently offering a JobBridge Internship for a Communications & Marketing Assistant. This is an interesting and varied role, offering ongoing learning opportunities and full support. We are also offering, through South Dublin Voluntary Group, two CE roles: a Receptionist and a Childcare Assistant. Currently we are also recruiting for volunteer Parent Mentors who have completed Dr Tony Humphrey’s Parent Mentoring course. Read more here about all three roles including application details, or call 01 662 9212 for additional information.

Our Budget 2015 Panel - ten lone parents and/or parents sharing parenting who are collaborating with us on our budget submission - discuss a different topic every month including housing, childcare and the importance of after school care, tax credits, in work incentives and educational supports for people parenting alone. You can be part of the discussion too by taking our anonymous monthly survey. This month's survey is on Housing Supports. You can take it by clicking here now. Last month you gave us your views on Income Disregards. Read the results here

Mother's Day

This Sunday, we celebrate Mother's Day. One Family staff, board members and some of the parents working with us on policy issues have contributed their thoughts about the day to a feature that you can enjoy on our site on Sunday. We wish everyone a very Happy Mother's Day and remind all those brilliant Mums out there to pat themselves on the back! It can be an emotive and sometimes difficult day for many families for a variety of reasons. Our askonefamily lo-call helpline is managed by trained, supportive staff who are available Monday to Friday to all members of one-parent families who need a friendly ear.
If you missed the Today FM documentary Cherish All The Children about our establishment in 1972, featuring interviews with our brave founders, our first President Mary Robinson and many more,
you can listen here.
