A BEACON OF HOPE: EMIR ABDELKADER
Yesterday's Muslim Hero Matters Today

Cedar Rapids (Iowa)—home of the nation’s oldest continuously functioning mosque—will be the site of the seventh annual Abdelkader Global Leadership Prize essay awards for high school and college students. A component in the global educational initiative, Abdelkader Education Project (AEP), the contest highlights a face of Islam rarely encountered in our media driven world.

Emir Abdelkader, an ethical leader, scholar, 19th century holy man, and anti-French freedom fighter, is considered Algeria’s George Washington. The essay contest was inspired by the 2008 launch of John Kiser’s book Commander of the Faithful: The Life and Times of Emir Abdelkader in Elkader, Iowa—named in the Emir’s honor in 1846 by an admiring lawyer from Dubuque. Upon Emir Abdelkader’s death in 1883, the New York Times hailed him as one of the “few great men of the century.”

PAST ESSAY WINNER BRANDON JENNINGS STATES
“AEP offers students a chance to engage with a narrative of history not often discussed in Western classrooms….In a time when mistrust, ignorance and violence dominate public consciousness, Abdelkader’s legacy of reconciliation, courage and compassion provides a useful model for us all.”
