French Version of Solar Power Irrigation Toolbox

The Solar Power Irrigation Toolbox (SPIS) is now available in French. Check out the toolbox for informative modules and user-friendly tools (calculations sheets, checklists, guidelines) on solar irrigation. 
The toolbox is developed by the GIZ in collaboration with the FAO, under the global initiative Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge for Development (PAEGC). It is hosted freely on energypedia.

Kenya Accelerates Access to Electricity

Kenya aims to achieve universal access to electricity by 2022 and is already leading in East Africa in terms of electricity access. Currently, there are 18 million people without access to electricity in Kenya. The government aims to connect these households via grid expansion or off-grid solutions. A subsidized plan will help the households to pay the connection fee of KSH 15,000 gradually. Read more...

The Climate Investor One program has captured USD 850 million worth of financing for developing renewables in Africa, Asia & Latin America. Energy Supply-Demand Gap in Rwanda

The current generation capacity of Rwanda is about 221 MW, but the country has a target to generate 512 MW by 2024. Rwanda hopes that the private sector operators will play a major role to meet the 2024 goals. Currently, the private sector contributes about 49% of the total generation and is planned to reach up to 70% by 2024. Read more...

Renewable Energy and Jobs: Annual Review 2019

According to this report from IRENA, the renewable sector worldwide employed 11 million people in 2018. Solar PV is still the largest employer providing a third of the sector’s jobs. Countries like China, the United States, and the European Union provided the largest number of renewable jobs while other Asian countries have emerged as PV panel exporters. About 32% of renewable jobs are held by women. Read more…

Shining a Light: How Lighting in or around Sanitation Facilities Affects the Risk of Gender-Based Violence in Camps

This report highlights that good quality-lighting around refugee camps make people feel safer, but lighting alone cannot remove gender-based violence (GBV). Other factors such as location, and quality of sanitation facilities (clean, with locks, doors, etc.) also play a significant role in GBV.  Read more...

Renewable Power Generation Costs in 2018

This report from IRENA highlights the latest trend in costs of renewable energy technologies. In 2018, the global cost of electricity decreased by 26% for concentrated solar power, 14% for bioenergy as well as solar, 13% for onshore wind, 12 % for hydropower and 1% for both geothermal and offshore wind. Read more...

Renewables 2019 - Global Status Report

According to this report from REN21, renewables provided about 26% of global electricity generation in 2018. Solar PV and wind have now become mainstream in the power sector and many countries are generating more than 20% of their energy using solar PV and wind. However, little progress has occurred in the heating, cooling and transport sector. Read more…

Mapping of Cereals, Fisheries and Other Productive Use Businesses for Village Mini-grids: A Review of 15 African Countries

The report focuses on productive use (PU) activities in 15 African countries, namely: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Republic of Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It then identifies 43 different types of off-grid PU activities that are relevant for village-based mini-grids. Read more...
