USD 200 Million Energy Project for West Africa and the Sahel Region

The World Bank has approved the Regional Off-Grid Electrification project (ROGEP) to improve access to electricity in 19 countries in West Africa and the Sahel region. ROGEP will assist regional policymakers to create a regional market for modern stand-alone solar home systems and also help adopt regional standards. Read more...

Zimbabwe Provides Free Electricity Connections to Rural Institutions

The Rural Electrification Fund (REF) in Zimbabwe will now electrify all public institutions such as schools, government extension offices, and other government departments for free. REF will offer 100% capital subsidy to the public institutions. The institutions will only have to pay for the internal wiring of the buildings and the connection fees. Read more….

USD 82 Million Grant for Mozambique

The World Bank has approved a USD 82 million energy grant to Mozambique. This grant will help to increase access to electricity in the peri-urban and rural areas, expand the existing grid network and promote the use of off-grid energy solutions in areas where grid expansion is not feasible in Mozambique. Subsidies for Off-grid Solar in Togo

GBP 39.8 Million for Efficient and Clean Cooking Appliances

The UK government has awarded a GBP 39.8 million fund to the Loughborough University and the World Bank to research on innovative, clean and modern alternatives to traditional fuels such as charcoal and coal. This program will focus on creating a Challenge Fund to invent alternatives to traditional fuels, develop new technologies to make electric and gas cooking more efficient, create viable business models, and also provide evidence on how countries can transition to modern clean cooking. Electricity Access in Sub-Saharan Africa: Uptake, Reliability, and Complementary Factors for Economic Impact

According to this publication from the World Bank, the fundamental problem in Sub-Saharan Africa is not the lack of power but rather the lack of economic opportunities and poverty. Therefore, it suggests that increasing the income of the consumers via productive use of electricity can simultaneously address the problems of access, low consumption, unreliability, and financial viability of the electricity utilities. Read more…

Moving More Money: Can Aggregation Catalyze Off-Grid Financing

The financial and technical intermediaries (aggregators) can address the funding gap in the off-grid sector by catalyzing investments in the sector. These aggregators can attract larger investors by bundling up projects and companies into portfolios to pool risk, reduce costs and increase investment sizes.
This publication from IIED includes three case-studies to show how aggregators can catalyze off-grid financing: AEPC in Nepal, IDCOL in Bangladesh and SunFunder mostly in East Africa. Read more...

Measuring the Impact of Household Energy Consumption on Respiratory Diseases in India

According to this paper, households using solid fuels as the primary source of cooking are 17 to 60% more likely to suffer from respiratory disease. This study is based on 117,752 respondents, identified with chronic disease in the District level household survey from 2012-13. Read more...

This study accesses the sustainability of 24 community-owned solar mini-grids (SMG) in India, operation over an extensive period of time.
